Is it too late to pick up a Razr Maxx?

Hey all,

I'm eligible for an upgrade on Verizon and was looking at picking up the Maxx. I just had a couple of questions to ask. First off do you think it would still be wise to get a Razr Maxx, it's been out for over a year now, my concern is that some new phone is going to be announced next week and I'm going to be stuck with old tech for 2 years? I've checked out the Maxx HD but it's just too big for me, I'm not a fan of having a a huge phone, plus the bigger screen means less battery (since it has the same).

Here's the thing, I'm coming from a Thunderbolt, which is basically the the worst battery life of any android phone. The massive battery on the Maxx sounds amazing as I'm sick and tired of watching my Thunderbolt drain 70% in 4 hours, and that was barely even using it. Is there any newer phone, or upcoming one that will have battery in the 3000+mah range?

I'm a light user, ~50-100 texts a day, 1-2 phone calls, only browsing the internet for a few minutes here and there and checking facebook once or twice a day, how long do you think that will last?
Also a concern I have is that the cell reception is really weak at my house, I have wifi at my house so I'm hoping that shouldn't be a problem, right?

Plus the thing is only 50$ on amazon wireless!
 
I just upgraded to a RAZR MAXX from a DINC2 a few months ago, my personal opinion, go for it, battery life is amazing, my average use is testing, a few calls, moderate game playing (addicted to Dark Summoner) and my battery lasts me a good 30+ hours before i need to plug it in, now your use may vary, i have my smart actions tweeked to my use, but all and all, its a great phone, and if your not into rooting, or wanting to manual update to jelly bean, the OTA update is right around the corner, oh and amazon has it for $50, check best buy, mine was a free upgrade
 
It's totally a personal preference thing. I got the Bionic about a week after it came out (that was when I became eligible for the upgrade -- I was counting the days). I had a series of Bionics which failed on me before VZW swapped me into the RAZR MAXX a few months ago. And now? I am counting the days until I can get into the Galaxy SIII. And, when that happens, I'll be asking myself the same question you're asking yourself (except about the SIII).

If I were in your shoes, my biggest concern would be how long Verizon is going to keep updating the RAZR MAXX. I mean, yes, Jelly Bean is on the horizon, but in the next 18 months (or however long until you can get your next discounted phone), there are bound to be more Android upgrades coming. Is Verizon going to keep pushing them to the RAZR MAXX when the damn thing is 3 1/2 years old? I don't know. On the up side, the MAXX is a very popular VZW phone (and they seem to be supporting it a lot more enthusiastically than they did the Bionic), but 3 1/2 years is a long time. And are you going to care if everyone else has Key Lime Pie while you're back on Jelly Bean?

As for the new phone that you're afraid is going to be announced next week -- that's probably going to be the X Phone -- the first phone to come out of Google's acquisition of Motorola Mobility. It's all rumors at this point, but they sound pretty tasty.
 
Back in December my old phone crapped out on me and I was looking at either the RAZR maxx or the RAZR m. I went with the RAZR m because the size felt better & I had a 32gb SD card so the difference in 8gb instead of 16gb didn
 
The next expected big announcement ... Motorola-X ... as pointed out is not very firm yet. Some assume it will come out in the Summer. I don't know how valid that assumption is. It may be "too large" for your taste.

I have the Razr MAXX. I love it and I got a day and a half off of one charge using Juice Defender. Probably would have been longer if I had noticed that my screen timeout wasn't working correctly once I fell asleep last night. Anyways, It's a great phone. I only have one caution note to mention. I know in my area the Verizon stores are no longer carrying ANY accessories for the phone. And the reason why is all because the HD versions of the phone came out. Nothing that goes with the HD phones is compatible with the regular versions. But the best alternative is to go on amazon and get cases and the like for it. It will save you money.

Overall if you want a good solid phone, then go with the MAXX. If you can make yourself wait for the next big thing then go for it. Myself I'm happy with the MAXX until I can get the S3 in September.
 
I passed over an S3 and an iPhone for my Razr Maxx (Mainly because it was free), and I don't regret it one bit. I played around with someone's S3, and for $199 I am not impressed, even though it was a nice phone. I have owned many Samsung and Motorala phones , and one of my experiences with Samsung is that the radios and navigations are horrible in them even though they have many features. From reading reviews, this S3 is no different. Motorolas, um....are durable, but seems to slow down tremendously over time, and are, in my opinoin, business type phones.


I look at it like this, technology changes every what, 3 months I think, so unless something amazing comes out that is just ahead of it's time, everything is gone to be out dated eventually in a couple of months. Therefore, unless you are ready to cough up $600 every few months for a cutting edge phone, you are going to be stuck with what ever you get for two years.

I'd say if the Razr Maxx is free or under $50, its well worth it, if nothing else just for the battery life. Also, this phone is quite durable, I have dropped this sucker in a toilet and it was still going (I did exchange it afterwards, yeah I know...foul). In addition, I have gone 2 days on average without a charge and still have juice, and that is with WiFi, Phone Calls, music, You Tube, and 4G.
 
For me it is a love hate relationship. Well, hate is a strong word. I don't ever hate the phone , more like it frustrates me at times. There are so many features that I like. The battery,the quality feel, the look, and running this phone with Nova Launcher make this an ideal phone. The 2 things I don't like are the in and out internet reception and same thing with the wifi. It's just always a crapshoot with the internet connection. I'm not trying to scare you off but it's just something to take into account.
 
Mistaj how do you get THAT kind of battery life out of the regular MAXX? I don't mean to high jack this thread but seriously I get maybe a day to day and a half out of mine. I don't even do youtube or music. An occasional phone call but mostly texts and of course the scheduled twitter updates and facebook updates. I use Juice defender and Android Battery Booster for my task killer. They work great with each other and don't run in the background unless I allow them to.

Personally I will tell you that the S3 I guess can be classified that it WAS the next big thing. It's been out for what a good while now right? You are right that unless something is way ahead of it's time it will be outdated in 3 months. The same thing with a TV or computer. We bought our HD TV last year around father's day and I saw today at Wal Mart that they are shipping out the last of last years models for DIRT CHEAP. I mean a 55" LCD TV for 350 bucks?? And a decent brand too! Anyways they will always be getting to the next step right after we all run out and get the thing that is suppose to be the best. I'll be getting the S3 or Note2 in September. Haven't decided yet. I have to really see the value in having the Note2 before I get it.
 
Battery life is amazing. But my phone has recently had slowdowns that are really making me mad. I've tried clearing the cache. Personally, I would avoid a Motorola phone. Hope this helps.
 
Oh yeah because you have a few little issues with one phone you say avoid a Motorola phone? Don't take this guys advice, Motorola makes fine phones.

Didn't have good luck with my Droid 2 and my father's X2 was awful. I went for the Maxx for the battery. Not saying its a bad phone, but I'd say there are better options out currently - especially outside of Motorola.
