I will buy my S3 in 2 days, what OS will ship on it and is Jelly bearn available officially? Can I update to it?
Thanks

Only if you root right now. Won't be available officially for at least a couple months I'd think.

Being a total n00bie to Android, I guess I'd rather just wait till it's officially out

What enhancements would it bring? will it allow my Galaxy S3 to make me breakfast for example? j/k :D

Ice Cream Sandwich is awesome. Ask anyone. It's just that Jelly Bean will be even more awesome!

Just buy it already.

Don't sweat it, ICS and the S3 is great, unless you gotta be that guy that has the latest and greatest you will be happy.

It will bring Project Butter which makes phones run smooth as ... butter. The Galaxy Nexus running Jelly Bean is reportedly as fast as the Galaxy S3 running Ice Cream Sandwich.

That's a dual core phone running as fast as the latest quad core phone.

But the point is that the S3 is still the fastest benchmark with which other phones are measured, so consider how even faster it will become when it gets Jelly Bean!

It will probably also bring Google Now! - google's superior version of S-voice and Siri-type voice command recognition platforms.

Thanks for the info guys! Sounds very promising!

I can't wait for my salary to be deposited in my account so I can get my hand on an ice cream!

Just for the sake of fairness, i feel the need to point out Siri can do some things that google voice search can't at the moment too: -

1. Geofence reminders, I.e. "remind me to buy coffee when I get to my dads house" , "remind me to get milk when I leave" - both of those work as expected.

2. Launch apps.

3. Continual conversations.

And panning around the browser in a Nexus running jelly bean is much smoother than the S3 running ICS, can't wait for JB :D

I'm looking forward to jelly bean update too. How did a year old nexus get it and not us?

Simply because it's a Google Nexus phone and not a skinned second party phone. Google writes the code to work on their nexus devices. Samsung, HTC, Motorola, etc then take the source code and put their OEM skin on it as well as modify it to optimize it for the hardware on an individual device. That process adds a couple months the the update process, not to mention carrier testing if the phone is not an international unlocked gsm phone. Overall, non nexus devices tend to take at least 3 to 4 months to update with CDMA phones taking much longer.
