Is Text Plus really free?

I've read the FAQs on their website and it seems there isn't, but would like to know for sure from real users.

I'm in the US and don't text very often so I didn't sign up for AT&T's unlimited plan (I pay per use). But I'd like to be able to text my brother in Canada (his carrier is Rogers) without cost, and especially without cost to him.

I use TextPlus on my WiFi-only Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0, and it is free to send and receive text messages. They even give you a free phone number. The service is ad-sponsored within the TextPlus app. I paid $2.99 for the ad-free version. I haven't had any problems with the service.

I use textplus gold w/no problems in wifi.

I don't think I've ever used it on my data plan.
