Is the new Hero/3 ROM necessary ?

Excuse my ignorance, but having had my hero for a couple of months now, I have been patiently waiting for the Cupcake / 2.1
With the news that 3, my provider in the UK has a new ROM (2.73 update) I am wondering if it is absolutely necessary to update the ROM or can I just wait for 2.1 when it is ready ?

I have heard upgrading to 2.73 gets rid of lag found in previous ROMs, so it might be worth it if that bothers you. Haven't ever used anything but 2.73 myself so I don't know how big of a difference it is.

2.1 could be a while yet anyway.

Your phone probably already has 2.73.771.68, the new firmware is a minor bugfix (last digit goes up to 73. I upgraded but haven't noticed any difference so far.
