I have a Thunderbolt and incredible. I have yet to find the stock voice dialer to work dialing a phone number. Is there an app the actually works? The stock app says to restart the phone. I do that.....no difference....does not work.

Voice Dialer HF - Android app on AppBrain

I use this and it does work. It sometimes takes a minute to go through all the contacts but it is a good app. Hasn't been updated in forever but it works.
The only thing to keep in mind is that if you use bluetooth (I do, in the car) the phone display has to be on for it to work.
There may be others by now too, haven't looked around.

For whatever reason, the phone does not like me for voice commands.

you have to make sure there are no ambiguous entries... Once all my contacts were loaded as Google contacts, it worked for me. You should be using Voice Actions, rather than the old legacy voice dialer.

what is voice actions? The google button on the bottom right? When I try that and say "call John Smith", it googles john smith. Am I missing something?

ya you gotta specify type of phone # entry..like:

"Call John Smith mobile"
"Call John Smith work"
"Call John Smith home"
etc..

If its googling him, then I suspect you have ambiguous entries. I had the same frustrating issue. It really works best if you don't have a mix of phone contacts and Google contacts. I like to keep mine in the Google cloud, so they sync, and I'll never lose them if I change phones. Once I moved everything over, it starting working every time (assuming it can hear me over the background)

ps... it sounds like you have Voice Actions installed, if you're long pressing the search key. To be sure, look it up on the market.

I tried Vlingo....very spotty. You would think there would be a stock app for voice dial that works. Even cheapo phones do that!

Vlingo has been spot on for me on different phones. You should know to speak slowly and clearly before it will choose the right person to dial. That's the only variable other than having two names that sound similar, such as Bonnie and Barney.
