Hi everyone I was wondering if I could recover some photos or contacts from my phone which I lost yesterday. I'm pretty sure it was stolen so is there a way that I can know when the device is online.

No way to recover photos unless they're backed up to Google Plus or similar.
Contacts, if you saved them to Google you can find them online at (i think) Google.com/contacts or log into a new phone with your Google address and password

Provided it's not been factory reset and it's still connected to a mobile network/wifi, you should also be able to track with Android device manager: https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager?u=0
