Is there a way to access a file without root?

I'm trying to help a friend edit his game save file in Candy Crush Saga.

The path is /data/data/com.king.candycrushsaga/app_storage/save_xxxx.dat xxxx is some random number which identifies user.

I am rooted friend is not. I tried temp unroot on my device and when I try to enter /data I get access denied. Is there some other way, like a script or something, to retrieve or write to the file?

I think that's a part of the idea of having a Rooted phone to be able to access the Root files.
And I believe that the Data folder is in the require root access part of the system.

That's what I was afraid of. My friend has a Samsung Galaxy S4 and doesn't want to void his warranty. I was hoping there might have been a way to do it.

nope unfortunately there is no way to get access to data which is in the system partition. the only way would be to root the phone.....if it was easier to get to it then android would be very easy targets for anything malicious.....so be glad that it is not that easy to do.

rooting is the only solution......and rooting has so much more upside then not, but it is not for everyone.
