is there a way to get the old animation boot screen back from 1.5 onto a rooted 2.1?

I'm sure you can as you can flash any compatible boot animation that you want. You should search over at XDA Developers for it. If you can't find it you can try to make a post requesting it, someone might help you out over there.

Here's a link to a discussion a while back about how to get the old 1.5 boot animation back. The link with the original animation zip file, shockingly, still seem to work. I'm not sure how well info this old will work, but best of luck!
