Is there a way to keep old phone on at tablet rate of $10

Is there a way to disable the phone part of an old phone, and keep it on the share everything plan, at the $10/month rate, basically as a small tablet??

I would like to keep the data on my old phone to use when I run, with RunKeeper, it would just need data. But, not worth paying $40/month to keep a 2nd phone on the plan.

If I can disable the phone, and make it billed as a tablet??

That's an interesting question, cybercruiser. I'd be inclined to ask Verizon Wireless about it. You might have to hear a pitch to purchase a tab, but still. ;)

If your plan includes unlimited phone calls/time, then you may have to endure a partial ETF in order to get the change in the plan. I am not sure. Perhaps we'll hear from others here who are in the know on Verizon's policies wrt that.

Meanwhile, I would not hesitate to either call VZW or if you have a "my Verizon" account, go in and click the "chat now" link and a popup will appear with a live person on the other end to answer questions. :)

Unfortunately Verizon goes off IMEI, whatever that number is assigned to dictates how they charge you.

This is correct.

When you call in to make a change or use MyVerizon you are providing information about the device. Based on the device type it changes your plan on the fly. For instance, if you were able to use a phone on a tablet plan you wouldn't be able to send and receive texts or make and receive phone calls, but the device is hotlined for data only. Depending on the plan you're on you won't be able to use the MHS feature, either.

I have a second phone that I use as a media player/mobile gaming device. I just connect it to WiFi when I need something. If you can use something that will collect the data and upload when it gets onto WiFi, that'd make it all easier.

I want to use it with RunKeeper, but, I assume it needs to be attached to the internet for that to work?? It needs GPS, and maps, so, I assume it's pulling that from the web dynamically, but, I guess I don't really know for sure??

Just thought I'd rather bang around my old phone when out for runs, then banging around whatever new phone I end up getting.
