Have a look at SMS Popup, which is free and can certainly be set to give repeated message reminders and which will work in conjunction with the standard SMS app. Hopefully you'll be able to set it to do what you want. I used to have it installed when an earlier release of the standard SMS app had a bug which meant that message notifications were intermittent and it seemed to work well.
