Is there an app that changes button functionality?

Let me elaborate. I have a Thunderbolt, and it's kind of annoying having to constantly hit that small power button on top to "wake up" (or unlock) my phone. Honestly, I'm not sure why they couldn't just design it so that the volume buttons could wake up the phone, too.

So, is there maybe an app, or something, that'd allow the volume buttons to do that? Closest I've found so far is "NoLock", but that basically just takes away the lock screen completely. I suppose that could work, but I'd be slightly paranoid I'd be accidentally waking my phone up and making it do stuff while it's in my pocket.

Widgetlocker allows any button to wake the phone up using easy wake
It unfortunately is not free on the android market but well worth the price
Widgetlocker allows you to place widgets onto the homescreen with quite a few customizable features like custom sliders

o.O Is this a spam post, or something...?

Anyway, WidgetLocker looks okay, but reviews say it kinda drains the battery because it requires Internet access (which seems odd, for something that just alters the lock screen).

If I were to go with the NoLock app, would it have any impact on battery life? What I mean is, does the lock screen use less battery life than just allowing the display to power down, or does it not make a difference either way?
