Help Is there an option in Android to turn off Wi-Fi sharing?

As I stated previously I've always been a Mac person so I'm used to going into settings and firewall, turning firewall on and turning sharing off for privacy and security. My question is how do I do that on my Samsung tablet or is there even an option to do so?

You mean sharing the device's WiFi and internet with other devices like laptops, with phones it's known as tethering. It's off by default, and you have to specifically turn it on. And sometimes you might have to pay extra for it as well, a tethering fee, all depending on your carrier and data plan.

Hey thanks for your reply. Does this also apply to non phones? my tablet doesn't have a phone feature... it's a Tablet Plus Nook

If the tablet doesn't have a mobile network connection and wifi only, it isn't even available to turn on.
I thought the mobile network connection WAS the Wi-Fi...for example if I'm connected to a public Wi-Fi hotspot then whatever mobile network that hotspot is using that becomes my mobile network? maybe I got it wrong...

On a phone when you tether, you are sharing your cellular connection with another device (or devices) via a Bluetooth or WiFi connection. Meaning the device you are tethering to your phone uses a WiFi or Bluetooth connection to access your phones cellular connection.

Ah I see what you mean. So I guess my device is pretty much safe from snoopers and hackers...I hope! :batdroid:

Wouldn't exactly say that. There is inherent risk any time you connect to a public network.
Exactly! which brings me to my original question lol... how can I reduce that risk? I know how on a Mac, but Android is fairly new to me.

Well it gets a bit technical. You need to set up a VPN or a SSH tunnelo_O. Here's a little light reading for you.

The best way? Don't connect to a public network, but that is not always practical.

Edit: Sorry that first link was too commercialized*.

*Probably not a real word.

Thank you for the info. Yeah I remember reading something about that but I didn't want to root my device or go into developer mode or do any of that stuff yet. Thanks again for your help.

The VPN does not require root. Look at the Tom's Guide article that I posted. Pretty straight forward.

hmm ok looking at my Avast and I don't see any VPN. Could someone tell me where this option is or is it already built in and runs in the background?

Let's see. Have you ever heard of FOSS? I think you should look here: F-Droid
You will first have to enable "Unknown Sources" in your security settings. F-Droid requires an app manager APK to be installed on your device. It is safe. Then you will have access to the FOSS repository. Search VPN.

Another Place to look: APK Pure

Android as a base unit is bare. The various software components are provided by the OEMs and Carriers. This provides for hundreds if not thousands of configurations. To truly get to know your device, you must first "get under the hood".

This is not an "out-of-the-box" question that you ask.
