Is there any app that provides equivalent functionality to imessage?

By equivalent functionality, I mean the app will send a message as data if the other side supports it, if not, it will be sent over cellular.

At the moment it seems like you need two apps in android to achieve the same as what imessage does on an iphone.

If this doesnt exist, is it feasible for someone (other than google) to make this? I.e., could whatsapp release such an app, if they wanted to?

Thanks chaps!

I just checked out Viber, it only sends data messages, not cellular ones.

And Id rather not use facebook as my primary messaging app! For a start, I may want to message someone who isnt my friend.

You can exit out of the application on Android if you want to send purely cellular messages, although most people have a data allowance or unlimited data which is much cheaper to use with Viber or similar program to send messages with than pure SMS messages.

But most people dont have viber, thats the problem. If everyone had viber/whatsapp then it would be fine, but they dont, some people must be contacted via cellular. And its annoying to have to use a separate app to do that.

Yes I understood, and I suggested that if you wanted to contact people only using the cellular network, then you can do that without using any third-party programs at all, with the stock messaging program on any phone.
