is they any way to unlock data for samsung skyrocket using prepaid?

i paid full price for my phone cause i didn't want to sign a contract.
then AT&T tells me all samsung phones have a block on data for prepaid users
so was wondering is there a way around that block??
like if you root your phone or something or is wifi all i'll ever have
