Root Is this a rooted thrive? Please help

I repair electronics to get new devices instead of buying new. It's the only way I can afford some of these awesome things. So I recently bought a broken Thrive through a pawn shop. They sold it broken for repair, so I didn't expect it not to be usable once it was working again. It wasn't powering on and had some other issues. I fixed those problems just fine but now after it starts up, it goes straight to a password screen. I tried to do a factory reset, but it says it can't mount that location ect..... and the reset fails. It then boots right back to the same password screen. Is this a rooted tablet? If so is there another way to reset it, reroot it (if there is such a thing), or otherwise get past this so it can be made useable again.

I've never rooted a device, I've read up and am willing to try, but I don't want to brick it.

Thanks in advance.

When turning it on, Hold down the Volume+ button and Power button at the same time. Release the power button when it vibrates and you should see 3 boot options if it's rooted. The center option being Recovery Mode, where you would reset all user data (Which would include the password issue). The right Option is Download mode where you would use Odin and a PC to flash a new system to the device. I can't recall what the left hand option is but I think it's just reboot.
