Root Is VZW messing with Wireless Tether?

jeffkyle

Lurker
Apparently they are doing some kind of blocking. On both my wife's and my phone, we can connect, but after a couple minutes our pc gets disconnected. sometimes when we restart the wireless tether it will connect, and sometimes it will not... occasionally we have to wait a while and try again and it will work for about 5 min..... anyone know what is going on?

I know they have blocked users from downloading it from the market; however, I am unaware and doubtful that they can interfere with its usage after it has already been installed.

They can't interfere with its usage. In fact, they can't even tell if you're tethering unless the app itself is triggered to alert them (stock app does this unless you disable that aspect). The reason they are blocking the tethering apps is to reduce the number of potential users that use them. They are doing this because they cannot tell if you are using them.

Just side-load, or use the default app with the tethering alert disabled. They're both doing the same thing, tethering while reporting the data as being from the phone.

How do you use default app and disable notification?

Keep in mind, NO ROOT REQUIRED. This works on a pure stock Incredible.

- Hit "Phone" and dial ##778, then hit call.
- Options will come up, select "Edit Mode."
- Password is "000000" (zero, six times)
- Select M.IP Default Profile
- Make sure that NAI and DUN NAI are both the same - yourphonenumber@vzw3g.com (basically, remove the dun part)
- Now, go back to the main menu where you selected M. IP Default Profile
- Select Security
- Change S.IP DUN User Name to the same as above, hit menu, commit changes.
- Your phone will reboot. All done.

Ok, so what is this, and how does it differ from the wireless tether app? I'll explain.

Verizon cannot tell where data is going once it hits your phone. So, to alleviate this, they set up two "accounts" for when your phone is connected to the internet. One is normal and the other is "dun." When using data on the phone, you're under the normal profile. When you use the official tethering app, you're under the "dun" profile. When under "dun," ALL data that passes through the phone goes to your 2GB motnhly tethering cap. So, if you have tethering turned on, and you're not actually tethering, any data you use on the phone goes towards your cap.

Free wireless tethering apps use the normal profile. The above modification causes both the normal and "dun" profiles to use the normal "account." No form of reset will unchange this, so make sure that you manually change it yourself before taking the phone in for service. That's right, not even the RUU will change this!

Also, be advised that any form of wireless tethering without paying Verizon the monthly fee is considered a violation of the Verizon terms of service, and they can terminate your service at any time. By doing this modification, you do this at your own risk.
