Root Isn't there a way to format a phone

Isn't there a way to format a phone? I mean, really, I have a headache from reading about rooting phones and what not. All I rally want to do is listen to music, maybe take some pics or something, and use the wifi in my house to play with my old phone. Can't I just format it like a computer and put some sort of minimal os on it? I had a metropcs lg optimus m and it seems like now that I have no service it doesn't do anything. I can't even listen to music. I'd like to format it clean and maybe do some little tasks like video or music.

As of right now the only minimal OS that can run on this firmware is the Android Software Stack which runs on Linux.

In other words, rooting the way we have and flashing recoveries then custom roms is the best(only) way to go.
