Issue with update to Gingerbread

I'm attempting to update my 2.1 Desire Bravo to 2.3 Gingerbread by running RUU_HTC Desire Android 2.3 Upgrade (Gingerbread). exe.

Everything seems to go fine until the phone resets and goes to bootloader. Once there, it just displays RUU in white text with orange background. The RUU fails with Error [171]: USB Connection Error.

I've tried running the RUU as administrator, and tried several different USB cables and ports.

Can anyone suggest a resolution to this issue?

I'm clutching at straws a little here but try downloading another copy of the RUU in case the file is corrupted.

My next suggestion would be another PC. Which version of Windows are you using? Others have had issues with 8. Try an older OS if you have access to one.
