Issues with Navigation

I use Google Map for navigation and of late I find that the directions are quite slow and there is a lag between the actual location and what the voice navigation says. Sometime a good 5 minutes delay is encountered which makes the navigation useless.
The location in the map is correct it is only the problem with the voice prompt where there is a delay.
The phone also gets too hot and I am wondering if these are related.
There is no problem with other application.
Do I need to replace the battery and will this help ?

Has Google Maps updated recently that you know of?
Does a reboot of the device help any?

Have you tried clearing data for Maps? It could be getting bogged down in its own cache.

If it's overheating, that could be causing the issue too...
