I've tried the iPhone - it's awesome!

IOWA, I am proud (yet slightly embarrassed) to say I looked though each one of those pictures you posted and, to my amazement, they were all the same one!! D'oh!!

Anyway, I think this post has gone from off and on topic to criticism and defense. How about we just let this go and be friends, eh? Some people I know want to die with their iPhone in their grave (figure of speech), while others would rather have a Droid when the time comes.

Personally, I and most of my friends have gone from iPhones and iPod Touches to Droids and Eris'. While we enjoy the change and look to it as an upgrade, I still have a few friends who adore their iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads more. This conversation is like a less-heated version of Mac vs. PC, which is a flame war I hope we NEVER start. It always goes nowhere and the poor Linux and OpenBSD guys are left out.

Glad I could help!

Thanks for providing the humor and making me feel like an idiot, then suddenly seeing the light after *much* research. My few minutes were not wasted!!

IMHO, Apple do one thing better than anyone... product design and software integration. I'm a designer, so their minimalist, non-fussy approach appeals to me. However, its often at the expense of openness. I had a iPhone 3g for nearly 2 years and loved it, but I started to get bored with it, as 2 or 3 OS updates didn't change anything aesthetically - that rigid icon layout for example. The updates did add some great features like copy and paste, which is far superior to Androids efforts I'm sad to say. I love the fact that I can arrange my screens and add widgets on my Nexus One. I love the notification system on Android. I love the multitasking on Android. I love the fact that I can add customise icons etc on Android. I'm not a big app downloader so for me, neither platform has a winning influence in this area. My phone is mainly for business use with a little facebook and twitter.

I'm looking forward to Googles continued efforts on Android... I'll also be watching Apples efforts.

Just my 2 cents.

Android is a much better OS, as a new user getting his first Droid next week, my problem is the many variants of Android phones and interfaces. If I wasn't unemployed and had a lot of time on my hands, I wouldn't have time to research and decide on one and would be more likely to go with an Iphone.

Apple is a one-trick pony, but it's a very, very strong trick: people want simplicity in their devices. It's all too much now. I consider myself very tech savvy, but keeping up is something you have to want to do, and not everyone does.

I'm not saying we shouldn't have the hardware choices (this is a major advantage over the Iphone, Android is scalable, and will have both cheaper and more expensive phones eventually), but Google, for god's sake, just ban the custom manufacturer UIs and let the user customize and learn the joys of customization post-purchase. If Android really wants to increase market share, it needs a consistent interface and brand. The average user is reading a review, and asking "Motoblur? Sense? Samsung? WTF? I thought this was an Android phone. Aw hell, you know what, AT&T or no AT&T, at least I know what I'm getting on the Iphone."

Jailbreak an iphone and get the best of best worlds. i have myself and i love it, you install android on your iphone and choose at boot up.it used to be very buggy but it's got to the point now where it does everything seamlessly. 3g calls, wifi and everything, with widgets. and no, i'm not advertising aha, just have really enjoyed android and iphone os on the same device, and they are getting close to porting sense ui, which i can't wait for. :)
