Japan Phone Makers See Opportunity in Android

Yeah digital tv tuners would be AWESOME!!! I don't understand why they are fighting allowing us to have TV on Android/iOS/Winmobile so bad. One of my favorite internet sites is ATDHENET.TV/ because you can watch sports and stuff on there. It's not perfect on my DX, but it's definately better than what's available now. Which is basically NOTHING as far as watching sports for free is concerned.

Not too long ago I logged onto ATDHENET.TV and they had a link to a new address (actually this is the new address, I can't remember the old one) with a sign saying, "we had to move as our domain was shut down for copyright infringement". So I don't really know how long this one will be up, if they'll keep having to hop around and around or what, but it doesn't make sense to me.

They aren't showing HBO boxing fights or anything like that, you can pick up all of the sports that they provide over the air absolutely free if you have a TV antenna at your home... FREE!!! So why don't they want us to be able to watch them on our phones for free? My guess is because NBA.com and NFL.com want to sell us the apps that allows us to watch those games. But that's bogus if you ask me. If you can pick it up for free with an antenna, then we should be able to watch it on our phones for free if we so please.

The networks are still getting money from the advertisers, that's how they make their money broadcasting over NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, WGN, etc... So why should we have to pay NBA.com or NFL.com anything at all to watch them on our phones?

Doesn't sit well with me. But unfortunately I'm afraid we won't be seeing built in tuners anytime soon either due to this greed.

Let's put it simply. Since October of 2010, Android has taken off in a big way in Japan. The Galaxy S was a major hit there and is competing with the iPhone right off the best seller lists. But its the other Androids that are notable since these are coming from Sharp, Toshiba, soon NEC and Panasonic. These are Androids that are unique only in Japan and you won't see outside of it. These Androids incorporate all the Japanese mobile services such as mobile wallet and iSeg TV tuner and so on.

Stuff like the Galaxy S and iPhone, all the foreign smartphones, can never be primary phones in Japan because they lack these essential services. In fact, just for NFC, they are taping the NFC chips on the back of the iPhone. Ugly. But these new Androids do. They have taken off in a big way in Japan. The Iphone has been a big hit in Japan and has been monopolizing the best seller lists since summer. Till the Androids fight back. In four months, Sharp may have accounted for already well over a million sales, which is remarkable since this is on one country.

We got the Sharp Lynx Docomo 3D, Sharp AU KDDI ISO3, Toshiba Regza ISO4, the Sharp Galapagos, and a Galapagos clamshell (an Android with a Psion form factor). Foreign Androids coming in in the form of the Samsung Galaxy S, Tab, ZTE, HTC and others.

This is Docomo's current smartphone line:

See the Androids? The LG and Samsung are obvious, but note the Regza and the two Lynx. The Regza has a 12mp camera and one of the Lynx has a 3D display.

Upcoming products:

The Medias is the so called "thinnest" phone. But note it has a fixed date for the release of the Xperia Arc and above all, a Honeycomb tablet.

This one is KDDI's lineup:

Again, all sorts of Androids we never see all before boasting 10 and 12mp cameras, TV tuners and large screens.

KDDI will add a familiar name to their lineup on April --- The HTC EVO for their WiMax services.

This one is Softbank's smartphone lineup. Again, Androids we don't see on this side of the pond, with the familiar names only the Dell Streak and HTC Desire HD.

Yea I've got the Toshiba Regza T-01C on Docomo, it's pretty cool. Waterproof (to an extent I guess), 12.2mp camera, 'osaifu keitai' (the ability to pay for stuff in various shops by waving your phone over a sensor pad), TV antenna and a massive screen.

The only problem is that we're still hanging out for the 2.2 update, I'm missing flash and move to SD, which they say is coming sometime in Spring. Hopefully it's not too far away.

There seems to be a big Android push with various carriers, there's quite a bit of TV advertising about it. As with some other countries only one carrier has iphones which have had a bit of a head start but I'm pretty sure android will catch up before long.

Ha, you're the very first person I've seen on here from Japan. Which seems strange since Japan is such a techno-junkie laden country. But I suppose since Android is just now taking off over there this makes sense. I suppose we shall start to see more and more Japanese (and/or people from Japan... not sure if you are actually Japanese, or from somewhere else and just live there) around this site very soon.

Can't wait to see some really kick ass phones come out of Japan personally. Toshiba has been my favorite TV manufacturer since I bought my first Toshiba TV (27 inch stereo) back in 1990. I'd love to see them break into the mobile phone wars over here!!!

Yea I'm not Japanese, I've been here about 4 and half months so far.

I'd say the main reason there aren't more people in Japan registered here is the language barrier, android is quickly becoming very popular here.

I'm slowly picking up the language, my wife's japanese and speaks english which helps a lot. The google translate app is a big help.

I'd love to go to Harajuku as well but I'm in the south, next time we head north I hope.

I hate Japanese phones. They are damn cool, but you can't use or buy them outside of Japan. *fuming with jealousy*

My fiancee's Docomo Japan phone worked when we were living in Australia.

Her one would only roam as it wasn't compatible with the SIM cards but apparently some Japanese providers (Softbank or AU maybe?) can utilise some sort of adapter to work with a few foreign carriers' SIM cards.
