Japanese Whaling Operations Suspended

17 Feb 2011: "Japanese Fisheries Agency official Tatsuya Nakaoku said the Japanese factory ship, the Nisshin Maru, had suspended operations since February 10 "to ensure the safety (of the crew)" following numerous skirmishes with Sea Shepherd activists in icy Antarctic waters."

Activists claim victory as Japanese whalers end hunt over harassment | News.com.au

This is good news to wake up to this morning - The more whales saved from this disgraceful practice the better. Let's hope reports of "a changing tide of domestic opinion" in Japan are true..

Lets not forget the fining of sharks by the thousands. Oh that's right sharks are mindless eating machines.

Whales (and sharks) need to be hunted responsibly! To date, the whaling fleets of many nations (including Japan) take without consideration to the overall survivability of the species. Personally, while I disagree with the tactics used by the activists, I think this is a good decision by the Japanese fisheries agency... but it needs to be quickly followed by legislation recognizing that whales (and sharks) are not infinite resources along with a mandate that all future hunts will be limited... and in obeyance with International standards.

There are whales killed by americans every year.

Yes there are... and, in most cases, the whales taken by U.S. whalers are in accordance with International standards.

Heck, even the Eskimo people in Alasks adhere to these standards. Eskimo's hunt for whales in limited numbers and only during specific times of the year. This is significant given that their villages have been living off whale-based products for untold generations.

So, someone doesn't submit to what you think the best course of action is, just violently attack and threaten them until they give in... there is a name for that you know... fascism.

to be fair, I don't like their tactics, but the number of whales would likely be a lot less without them

I hate insular attitudes, cipher
just because you font know them, you don't care for them

Oh yes, DAMN those japanese...

Why can't they just abuse cows their entire lives like americans?

I live like 40 minutes outside of LA and there is a dead cow some dairy farmer just dropped off in the ditch that I'll pass on the way to work.

I don't know them personally, but I'm aware of Sea Shepherd group and what they do. I've got discovery channel.

I wholeheartedly agree with this post.

I definitely agree that whaling operations need to be dealt with......... in a legal fashion

all this case goes to show the world though is that terrorism is the most effective way to get what you want

No its just that the Japanese will take a lot of crap off people compared to other countries. This is the only reason why the pick on them. If this was lets say Russia they would of sunk the Steve Erwin long ago.

I did love how when the whaling ship got their prop fouler and tried to use it on the Steve Erwin and they was all like that's not right and so on. I guess they forgot they was doing the same thing earlier. I am all for conservation but those guys are eco terrorists
