I'm currently running rooted ICS on my Bionic. I was traveling when I started getting the OTA notice for JB, so just decided to ignore it and wait until I got home to try to sort this out. I've been hitting "Later" twice a day for a couple of weeks now, so I need to do something.
I rooted the phone using the program found at droidrazrroot.com_ics and it worked/works just fine.
If I correctly understand the current situation, if I upgrade to JB I will more than likely lose root and there is no easy way to get it back using Windows. I've seen something about Voodo OTA Rootkeeper app, but the jury seems to still be out whether it really works 100% of the time.
I bought this phone the day after it went on sale so I am at the point where I'll be due an upgrade in a few months [July I believe]. I am happy with how it runs on ICS, particularly knowing that it is reaching the end of its service life and probably won't be receiving any additional upgrades. I have an Asus tablet running JB and honestly don't see that much difference between ICS and JB-certainly not the level of difference exhibited between GB and ICS on this device.
So, I am at the stage where if I had to choose between unrooted JB and rooted ICS I'd probably just stick with rooted ICS.
Here are my questions:
-Is there any easy way to take the OTA JB update and preserve root?
If so, what is it?
-Since I am currently rooted is there some way to just get JB as a custom ROM instead of going the OTA route, and wouldn't this be easier than taking the OTA and potentially losing & trying to regain root?
-I have a bunch of apps frozen with TB. If I want to stop getting the "Install Now" notices, can I just tell the phone to apply the update knowing it will fail because of the frozen apps?
-If I do the foregoing but later decide I want the JB OTA update, am I out of luck, or is there some way to apply it?
Thanks in advance for the assistance.
