Help Jelly Bean 4.1.2 on Galaxy SII Performs slow

jpfotoz

Newbie
Hi.. I just upgraded my Galaxy Skyrocket S2 with KIES and everything seems to have gone fine. Apps are all there, settings etc. :)

My BIG issue is that it seems to be performing even SLOWER than ICS (4.0.1).

Any suggestion? I'm not rooted.

Thanks in advance!

J

Is this the same as the Settings > Backup & Reset > Factory Reset?
I've seen directions where you press simultaneously the Volume Up, Home and Power button?

Thanks!

Usually a factory reset after a big upgrade like this would allow the update to "settle in".

I upgraded from the GB to JB 4.0.4. and after the download was complete, the phone resets itself so that the new software upgrade "settles in". If you do a factory reset that will improve the speed but from what I`ve been reading, a factory reset will restore the phone back to its previous state by getting rid of all apps and upgrades.

I also did notice that my phone is somewhat slower after the jump from GB to JB but I think that because the new download/upgrade is using more of your RAM. You can try to limit the number of apps you have running by disabling them but be careful which ones you disable; some are integrated with the OS and you may disable your device all together.

JB is 4.1.2. Ice cream sandwich is 4.0.4.
A factory reset resets your phone to all stock - no user downloads/files. It doesn't restore it to it's previous state. That's restoring a backup.

A factory reset has been proved to fix the high RAM usage. JB's Project Butter should make everything nice and buttery smooth with the occasional lag.
Also, (just for anyone's reference), don't use task managers to kill apps. Free RAM = wasted RAM. The Android OS from Gingerbread onward doesn't require one except possibly in an emergency.

So. If I backup the phone (I use KIES) - do a factory reset (Volume Up, Home and Power button) - and then restore my Apps with KIES - that should fix the lagging issues and have my apps back.

Right?

Thanks.

It should, yes. :)
It's only volume up + power button though. No need for the home button. Unless they changed it for the skyrocket.

Once you get to the recovery screen (the screen after you turn off your phone and hold vol up + power), navigate with the volume controls and select to format/reset phone.
After you do the reset, if you backed up your stuff via Kies, you should be able to get them back by syncing your phone to Kies and it SHOULD get rid of the lag.

After the ICS upgrade I was experiencing all sorts of weirdness -- doing a factory reset was the only thing that brought things back to normal. Just make sure you have a REALLY good backup of your apps and data first. Also jot down any notes about how you had some of your settings and pages set up so you know how to 'put them back' after the reset. I'm not a fan of change so it was tough for me at first to get everything back to the way I like it. It sounds like I may have to do that again after the JB upgrade too. This time I know to be prepared. Good luck!!

If I back everything up, then do a reset, will the "background dirt" that is slowing everything down come back when I do a restore?

Also, my memory on the device (on device storage for apps, not ram or cache) is nearly full. I tried moving apps to the SD card (settings>application manager and then
Move to SD for each app)

Afterwards, the icons on my home screens and in the apps screens were ghosts
with a small "SD" in the lower right corner of the icon.
When I tried to open the apps, it said they were not installed.

Does anyone know what is going on, and how to fix it?

I had to re install them. I'm wondering if they are now duplicated on the
device memory and the SD card.

Hey Mark42,

go to Menu > Settings > Storage > Scroll down to SD card, check Mount SD card. Now the apps you moved to the SD card should work and their icons look normal again.

Regards,

Regards,

I appreciate the help, but the menu options are Unmount SD Card
or Format SD Card. I suppose I could unmount and remount it.
Right now all my Apps are on the device memory. I don't even know
what memory there is - Is internal memory the same as internal SD,
and SD the same as External SD card? It seems like the terms used are
Internal Memory, Device memory, Internal SD, SD, and External SD
depending on where I am looking from.

I'm probably going to do a factory reset and reformat the card.
It has just been too slow, clunky and glitchy since I upgraded to
Jelly Bean. I did a cache clean from the devices menu (by holding
up/down volume and power button from a power off state). That helped
a little for awhile, but looking at the memory & file structure, it looks like
a chaotic mix of ICS and JB in all sorts of folders and (?)hidden files.
I'll try Jelly Bean after a complete wipe of everything, and if it still
sucks, I'll go back to ICS.

I have one silly/stupid game I hate to lose progress on (Hill Climb Racing).
It's nothing useful, but I hate to part with my upgrades in the game and
start all over. :(
