My Samsung Galaxy 10.1 Note has the option of security pattern, telling it the number of trials possible, followed by a pin or password of my choice. My Motorola Electrify M phone has the security pattern, but none of the options (number of trials, back up password). I think it defaults to my gmail password if I exceed 5 trials. I like the idea of setting the number of trials. Why the difference?

Because the other one is made by Samsung and the other is made by Motorola. They made their own customizations.
