Jelly Bean 4.2 small upgrade

Not sure it this is the wrong forum for this but i couldn't find anything else that fit. I get annoyed with reviews that say that OS updates are small and incremental...what does a big update need to have these days to make it big...does your phone have to cook breakfast?

Multiple user login...daydream...lock screen widgets...app security....camera updates with panoramic...notification menu updates.....small UI updates

I wouldn't call this a huge update either but i would say its far from incremental....i would say some of these features are pretty big actually....lockcreen widgets for example will completely change the way i interact with my phone and make the entire concept of widgets much much much more useful.....and daydream takes my favorite feature in webos and moves it to my current platform. Next you will se apps have daydream modes where they will launch when docked displaying your favorite apps info...thats huge

a small update to me is an update which plugs some security holes and adjusts small things about how your text messages are displayed or your ui looks.

i dont know if its easy to impress anymore

anyone agree?

I couldn't agree more...i mean in a visual aspect it might be small but behind the "what you are seeing" a lot more is changing...

Like from ICS to JB, i might tell a particular user that they won't notice much, but to be honest it was a big upgrade, especially with the introduction of Project Butter :)

I think the latest updates just intend to fix stability issues, which means there is a bunch of guys on Samsung team working hard to keep their jobs safe. It will never end...

I assume it depends on what is done behind the scenes to determine what the update is. Google themselves called this an incremental update, hence it's still 4.2 Jelly Bean. Much like the jump from 2.0 Eclair to 2.1 Eclair. It's easy to understand why Gingerbread to Honeycomb or ICS is a milestone, but this is a bit of a grey area. Seems like a small refinement on what was already done, rather than an overhaul.

but what...in your opinion....would be an overhaul these days? a new skin? a totally new UI? i think at this point any os with a stable user base will not be seeing those things unless the parent company wants to risk losing all their customers and brand recognition

also...in terms of software...theres little at this point that i think our phones need to do that hasn't been done yet....i mean sure theres plenty of room for better apps and ingenuity...but in terms of getting stuff done i think theres something for everyone at this point

i just think the days of major updates are past us for the most part....at this point an incremental update is a major update

The biggest thing I want to see is user game data synced across devices. I want my tablet and phones to always have the same game data. It should sync like contacts. That is the last big thing I feel Android is missing.

Like I said, 2.3 -> 4.0 was huge. It was all new APIs, UI, apps, and code.

I think software is where we will see the MOST changes, actually. We have reached the point of diminishing returns on the hardware side. We now call 1.5 GHz dual-core with 1GB RAM mid-Low range. There just isn't a way to differentiate on hardware anymore. it will be based on UI and appearance.

That being said, I have no clue what comes next in the UI side. Google always seems to be two steps ahead of us. Maybe zero buttons, completely gesture based? Likely side by side apps/windows. It's endless what can be done. We just need to think of what the next big thing is.
