Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) discussion

With all the rumors flying around, it's hard to speculate when it will be released. It really depends on the carriers.
Some carriers are notorious for releasing updates later than others, so some will probably see it sooner than others which is a shame. But that's the way it always seems to work with Android. One of my buddies has a Nexus on Verizon and he's still waiting for JB.

Personally I think we'll see probably see the updates start rolling out in mid September through early October. Being a Sprint customer the smart thing to do IMO is to get JB rolled out ASAP to help alleviate some of the negative press they've been getting due to the NV/LTE rollout and the issues a lot of people have been having as far as call quality and abismal 3G speeds.

But again I'm just spitballing here.
 
It is fine to be skeptical of rumors and speculation of other posters. It is not OK to insult people on their speculations. It does not help grow the community experience we all work to build. Thanks!

If you have an unbranded phone you'll get the update as soon as Samsung release it.
If your phone is branded you'll have to wait for your carrier to release the firmware, which will likely be some time after Samsung release it.

"Some time" on Verizon being defined as about 1/2 year. :rolleyes:
 
So does anyone know if Flash can be added to the JB OS? I seem to recall that Flash was not initially installed on the GNex, but we were able to add it afterwards.

Personally I think it's a problem not having it. I visit many sites that support it and see the frustration on my wife's face when her IPhone can't play a video. I don't want to be in that camp.
 
I was just reading that JB won't have Flash. Adobe isn't going to make a Flash plugin for anything after ICS. Is anyone concerned about that?
 
It should be fairly easy to get flash, on my nexus 7 I just downloaded the apk manually and installed it, works a treat with firefox.

I'm not worried. Partially because I don't use flash anymore. The second part being that they also said the same about ICS when it first rolled it out. They said they were not going to develop it for ICS, yet they did anyways.
 
Adobe are ending support for flash on mobile devices, next week someone the app will disappear from the play store, luckily there are plenty of copies around.

This has been known about for a while . Adobe is not supporting android 4.1+

It's not really an issue though. Flash player is mostly dead. Everyone's moving on to html5
 
if youve rooted but havent done anything else, you should still get the OTA update, but you will lose root access. you can try voodoo's OTA rootkeeper from the play store, but i think ive read that doesnt work 100% of the time...
 
I may be wrong but JB doesn't look like a vast improvement over ICS. I know it's only a point change and not major but I would have thought that the amount of press that JB is getting it would be more of a leap forward than just a step.

While I'm not certain for every variant, I'm fairly certain this is not the case. The root processes I've seen involve flashing a custom recovery to replace the stock recovery, then flashing SU or rooted ROMs to root the phone. If this is the case, then the OTA will give a notification that one is available, it will download, then it'll fail to flash as it's configured to work with stock recovery, not a custom one.

So, there are two solutions to update to 4.1 when it comes out. 1) Return to full stock via Odin, update via OTA, then re-root or 2) flash the official firmware/software that has been rooted already via custom recovery.

I think #2 is the easier method.

It's getting rave reviews because it finally got rid of that small ui lag that other versions had. I don't know if non nexus devices will see the difference though because we've yet to see what an oem skin will do to it.
 
I kinda hope being that I bought my S3 outright, completely devoid of any carrier that it'll arrive fairly soon, vs carrier branded ones. Interestingly enough, my S3 is quite a margin quicker than my friends 3UK branded S3.

As for the flash, just backup the APK using Titanium Backup, and then install it on JB later.

It's not supported, that doesn't mean it wont work. Also, it's already mentioned that flash is turd, slow, buggy and a miserable battery hog, Apple actually got something right!

Html 5 isn't all that easy to implement. Browsers on desktops are very inconsistent with their support and the browsers that do support html 5 video don't all support the same formats. Therefore, to use html 5, you have to use 2 or 3 different file formats with a fallback to Flash. It's hard for me to believe that Flash is not going to used for awhile yet.

Where can you get the apk file? Do you just do a search?
