Jelly Bean.......factory reset?

When I upgraded to ICS I did the factory reset after the upgrade. I did not do this due to any specific issues I was having. It was very time consuming backing everything up, reinstalling all of it as well as configuring all of my settings. I wonder what my experience would have been if I had not done the factory reset. In reading the Moto site I was unable to find where Moto recommended this. My thinking is that the vast majority of Razr owners know very little about the technical aspects of their phone and have never done a factory reset. Therefore, is a factory reset necessary with Jelly Bean? How many of you are doing one? What are the potential headaches that could arise if I opt out of doing the factory reset? Thanks

I haven't done one, I won't do one unless the phone starts to act a little 'wonky'.
That said, it's generally recommended around here to do an FDR after any update, it IS good advice. I'm being particularly 'bad' since I know that I can have my phone back to the way I like it in an hour or less. I flash new ROMs with some regularity, and I've gotten pretty good at backing up and restoring my phone. But, right now, I just don't feel like doing it, so I'm not gonna! :)

I know however, that I may pay a price for that in the future.

I got JB a few days ago as part of the soak test. I did not do an FDR and have had no problems. I agree with your point about the majority of users. Personally, as a UNIX/Linux system admin in real life, I see this as similar to the Windows mentality of rebooting a system to fix every kind of problem. When users ask me to reboot a *NIX system to fix a problem, I usually refuse as most problems are easily fixable via much less drastic means.

Doing a factory reset is the same as doing a shutdown/restart of your home computer every so often. It helps make things faster and run better.

I did not do one yesterday after installing the jelly bean update. I did reboot the phone twice after the install which helped with a few issues. I just have an issue with my favorite contacts widget not displaying pictures even after selecting the picture to display.

What do you mean by this? What could possibly happen by not doing an FDR?

The problem I hear most often from people who didn't do an FDR after an update is that their device became really slow and/or non-responsive at times. Or it may reboot itself without warning. The fix for these things is an still FDR. So it COULD be that I'm forced to do an FDR at a point/place where it's really unhandy, rather than doing one at the time of my choosing, while sitting on my couch at home watching TV.

I got the latest update from Verizon yesterday and the first thing I did was a factory reset. I have learned its best to do that after every update. I have also decreased my apps as the battery life was getting to be horrible. Too many apps utilizing too many things that suck the battery.

Got my JB yesterday. I typicallyl do a FDR. I did not do it this time because of the time consuming taks to setting up all my apps and screens.
I mya be foreced to do it in the future, but not not. [fingers crossed]

I haven't done a FDR yet and I updated yesterday also, I will probably do it this weekend when I have more time to set and download my apps again.

This is for un-root-ed users installing the production releases.
In the case of the Bionic ... for people who updated to ICS and did a Factory Data Reset there are No Problems ... yes folks ... None.

Reading this stuff from forum after forum ... after upgrading to ICS or JB you will do a Factory Data Reset. The question is not if. The question is when.

Choosing to do it early on to get a clean slate on which to build is optimal. Waiting you will end up doing it at some inconvenient time in the future. (You might even find some apps that don't run under the new system.)

Are there exceptions ... yes ... I dealt with a Droid 4 user who eventually did the ICS upgrade and never did a Factory Data Reset. On the other hand, he did not know Play Store existed and had no idea that people would actually download and install apps from sources other than what came on his phone.

The analogy to rebooting Windows is a little off. It is more like running Windows XP and upgrading to Windows 7 and expecting that everything that was running in the past will run in the future.

(prior to ICS I argued against Factory Date Rest after ICS I am a convert)
A clean slate is highly recommended.

Thom is right. In the long run it will come down to either doing the FDR and setting your phone back up OR dealing with issues upon issues that could continue to happen and cause havoc with your phone. Might as well do it now than wait for a problem to occur.

It wouldn't be such a PITA to do one except for some Apps which refuse to let you back up your data. The app goes; the data goes; and I'm stuck on Floor 1 of 100 Floors again.

(There oughtta be a law.)

My phone didn't let me get away with not doing an FDR after the update. Yesterday it starting lagging quite a bit when waking up. Then the icon for one of the apps on my home screen changed to the generic 'Andy' icon. Later in the day I sent a text message, immediately after that any time I pressed the icon on the home screen I was told the messaging app wasn't installed. When I looked at my apps folder I couldn't find it. About an hour later though I had a text message come in, to which I responded. However if I tried to open the app through the icon on the home screen I was still told that the messaging app wasn't installed. So last night I did the dreaded FDR, so far it's been fine, but I haven't really tried to do much with it yet.

After the JB update, I felt the phone was sluggish. One thing I thought was a little strange was that it took a long time to connect to wireless, close to 2 minutes, when it used to be close to instant. So reluctantly I did the factory reset. Huge improvement. Wireless connection is back to speed and the sluggishness is gone.

I just pushed the JB update last night. If there are any lag issues, bugs, or battery issues, I'm promptly factory resetting. After the ICS update, the issues appeared quickly so I expect to find out soon.

I did not wait for the ota upgrade and grabbed one last week. Don't know if I should have waited, but anyway....

I decided yesterday to do the factory reset and frankly, I am glad I did. It cleaned up the garbage and rid many apps that I haven't used in years.

Yes, it took a "little" while to set-up, but I have already seen speed that I have never experienced before.

I am going to post this question, but seriously, what changes occurred? Yes, it rid the moto and some verizon apps, gave us "now" and voice search, but I really don't see much else.

What I expect is that when the problem comes up it will be at the most inconvenient time possible. That is the reason for recommending the Factory Data Reset as soon as possible after the upgrade when it can conveniently (yes I know how much of a pain it is) can be done.

I agree there is no convenient time for problems to appear. I can factory reset and have it all back in 1-2 hours (I'm very picky too), and I usually do it at home on WiFi and it's not intimidating so I might as well do it after work today I guess.

EDIT: I did the reset at work, set it all up and everything since I had time. Much faster now, especially the task manager. I highly recommend this. However, I think I lost my saved Wifi passwords....

I did the FDR as soon as I finished the down load.
Ain't fun, but It's done...
I took the advice of a couple of moderators and other folks who know much more than I.

The FDR removes old programing that may conflict with JB and cause problems... Maybe now, or maybe down the road, or maybe never...
I chose to do the painful FDR and move on.

Never did a FDR for ICS, and it went swimmingly.

JB was working splendidly. And then I noticed the really annoying fact that, when typing in the search box in the web browser, Swype wouldn't automatically insert spaces between words, like it does in every other app (because that's what I have it set to do). I mean, I could understand no spaces when I'm typing in a URL, but I'm talking search box here.

Figured it was some bizarre conflict thing, so did the FDR.

Three hours of re-customizing my phone later, I open the brower, Swype some words into the search box, and, again, no spaces. This is just a new feature (and/or flaw) in JB. Feel like I did the whole FDR for nothing.

(Stupid JB/FDR. I had forgotten there were some apps I had intentionally refused to update, because I preferred their old versions, and now I'm stuck with the crappy new ones.)

If my Circle Battery Widget is any guide, though, battery life/management seems to be better. It only dropped about 7% while I was asleep last night, with Wi-fi on. It used to drop more like 30% overnight if I left Wi-fi on.

Not exactly. Shutting down your home computer does not trash all the programs you have installed on it, nor does it lose your data. It's more like reformatting your computer after you get a new OS. YMMV; but for me, FDR is a galactic PITA. I've never had anything good come from doing an FDR for any reason. When I upgraded to ICS I didn't do an FDR; I haven't done one yet for JB even though, on another thread, someone asked if I'd done one as though it was expected, despite the fact that, as others here have noted, it's not part of the order of things. My only problem with the upgrade, as I point out in that other thread, is that for some reason I lose the connection to my SD card if I'm attached to my computer. Never had this happen before. And even though I've tried to copy ringtones, alerts and notifications to internal storage, I still can't get the phone to recognize and use the desired ringtones when attached to the computer. On top of that, I usually have to reset the defaults once I detach the phone. But I digress.

I might be missing something as I'm not as technically advanced as most are. With the exception of getting used to a few quirks my Maxx seems to be operating just fine after the update. I might be in the "if ain't broke don't fix it" camp, but if I were to do a FDR would this be the way to do it. Back my pictures to my computer, my phone contacts are already in google so just reinstall and my apps are all on line so just reinstall them as well. On the surface it does not seem to be a monumental task, open for any suggestions.
