Help Jelly bean negatives? [GSM Variant]

VincentAnoid

Android Enthusiast
I've just got the OTA update on my GSM Galaxy Nexus. Still a bit anxious to go ahead with the update (Because I'd have to get used the UI again), I've read a lot of articles about the features of Jelly Bean.

Just looking for honest opinions, are there any flaws though, or anything that you find to be a downgrade from ICS. I'm in the UK so I'm assuming too that I don't have that "Dumbed down search" that Apple pushed onto Google.

PS. I'm going to bed soon so I just thought some quick replies would be nice :) Not because this thread is more important than others out there

From what I've read, the work around that was the "fix" for apples complaint doesn't remove universal search... Just does it differently I assume...

I'm cranky because voice recognition has disappeared from my phone since the update, but I'm guessing this might be a bug. "speak destination" in Navigation causes Nav to crash.

ummm i just got it everything is really smooth at first had some issues with scrolling but all seems fine :) i say update!

No complaints here!

Try settings> language> voice search> download offline speech.
Might help.

you won't have to learn anything new or new UI features. . it just does everything ICS did but better and with a few added perks like the "Google Now"
feature

The only "negative" is that some apps aren't yet updated for Jellybean. For example, I don't believe Volume+ isn't completely compatible for Jellybean, my HBO Go doesn't work, etc. I expect they will be fixed soon, though.

Otherwise, as others have stated, it works just like ICS (which is why it is 4.1). It just runs smoother. Google Now is great and, what is probably my favorite, I like the improved Notifications. I don't see any reason not to upgrade.

did it reset your guys's battery stats aswell?.....my phone draining like crazy gonna need to cycle it i think

The only negative I've seen so far is that it makes ICS look downright sluggish, so if you're digging "theICS" and think you got it good, think again :D

I have 2 negatives:

The dialog to select which app to open something in is a lot worse for 2 reasons. 1, it's a grid now instead of a list so you have to read left to right as well now. 2, more importantly you have to select an app and then press either always or just once instead of the much better tick box option for always and single press to open in an app just once. One of the best features of android is being able to choose which app to open something in which I make use of a lot and they needlessly made it slower and harder to use.

There is no thumbnail bar along the bottom in the gallery anymore so you can't quickly slide it along to get to another picture quickly, instead you have go go back to the main grid of pictures.

Everything else is great though. Not seen anybody report it and I found it by accident but if you swipe up from the back/home/recent apps buttons it gives you the lock screen slider but with just Google now as the option so there's a quick way to get in to it. There's lots of simple small additions like that that seem to have been overlooked in the reviews that all add up to make JB a lot better than face value...and of course the speed is incredible.

Actually a new feature that I actually like more replaced that. Instead of the filmstrip at the bottom, when you're looking at a picture. Pinch the picture as if you were trying to zoom out. You should see your pictures lined up now. Another neat little feature is if you flick a picture upwards, you can delete it. And if you flick it on accident, there's an undo feature =)

Ahh, thanks for that, I'm happy with that. I was wondering where the fling to delete was, thought they might have removed it at the last minute but it was hidden in that. I can see me accidentally deleting photos even with the undo button as it only undoes 1 delete.

App compatibility. Not all apps work with JB yet. So if there is something that you really need, check to make sure it will work first. Light flow is the one app that doesn't work for me. I really miss it too.

OP would you mind editing your post title and add what variant of the Nexus you're referring to? Thanks.

Reason is all of the VZW folks that have experienced JB have done so from custom roms. Not factory images like some of the GSM guys have. So if you're asking in reference to a GSM model that would make a bit of a difference.

a JB rom built from source is not the same as the FActory Image jb that google will/would push.

I've noticed that the music player behaves oddly now. I have mine set to shuffle. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't and just plays straight through the order listed. I turned off the shuffle last night and it still shuffled. Hitting the shuffle button a few times fixes it but one shouldn't have to.

Other than that, just waiting for GNow to collect enough data to work its magic. (Takes time to establish patterns.) Oh. As for it talking results back to you, you do have to keep it to some pretty mundane stuff. Most questions I asked came back with just a Google web search instead of speaking and producing a card.

From what I've gathered the negatives are the following:

  • Choice of which App to open with being more tedious
  • Music player's shuffle function
  • Google Play Store App compatibility (Fragmentation)
  • Swipe to delete function only undo's one delete

Just a question, is there software compatibility with the notification light now to replace the job of LightFlow?

Lightflow is working for me. If you look at the Lightflow issues webpage, they suggest that turning Lightflow off and then back on again has helped some people. I'd also go into Lightflow and double check your settings.

But does the Jelly Bean update come with notification light support?

Edit: this was supposed to be in reply to light flow working and I forgot to quote it

It sorta works. Gmail works fine. Stock message doesn't. The dev even says not supported for JB, yet.

Lightflow got an update yesterday but the dev said that it didn't include the JB fix, however, according to him, the fix should be in one of the upcoming updates.

Don't know if you use Flash, but you may want to make sure it is installed or updated before upgrading. It isn't available for JB, though it works fine. You'd have to sideload it otherwise.

JB is a smoother version of ICS, it's not revolutionary. If there are apps you gotta have, maybe hold off. Otherwise, it's a nice update and feels really good to use.
