Jelly Bean Tips and Tricks

You can turn your google nexus 7 into a phone using the app Talkatone. You can call any number in the US and CANADA for free and texting is free. There is a lite version and one that is paid for that offer other features. You need a google voice account to use this app which is free also. And there are other apps that let you do this such as textplus, textfree, ect but you have to pay for minutes using those apps.

Thank you so much to Teknologic. It works perfectly and so easy as I wouldn't know how to set it up manually.
This is a great forum for help.

Since the android Jellybean 4.2 update, developer tools have disappeared from the settings screen. If you want them to come back up, here's how to do it.

In this video I show that you can rollback system applications if you're not happy with the updates they send out. For example, I prefer the old Google Currents so I rollback my version in this video.

Go into settings > about phone/tablet > tap on the build number several times. It will show up.

Whoops! I did that just messing around and it said I am now a developer. Don't know what that means. How do I return to regular now? Helps!

So for people who forget to turn off wifi use the app called WIFI TImeout. You set the time from 0 seconds to 5 minutes to turn off the wifi... I used this on my phone and it saved me a lot of battery life. Sometimes it doesnt work though (like 20% of the time)

Good tip. I use Juice Defender which is a bit more involved (not complicated really though) and WAY more functional IMO. There is a free version with limited capability if you want to try it.

Sorry if its been covered else where but...

Do you want the number row on your Nexus 7's stock android keyboard?

if so follow this guide from mostly-tech.com, its written for the Nexus 10 but works fine on the Nexus 7:

Expand your keyboard – Since the Nexus 10 has such a large screen you may want to expand to a full-sized PC-style keyboard that includes number keys and extras like the screenshot above has. It’s tricky to set up, but worth it if you like to type in landscape mode. Go to Settings/Language & input and then touch the settings Sliders next to ‘Android keyboard.’ Next, touch ‘Advanced settings’ and touch ‘Custom input styles.’ It will say Deutsch and Francais, but you can ignore that. Touch ‘Add Style’ near the upper right. Then select your language and change the layout from QWERTY to ‘PC’ or one of the other styles. Now touch ‘Add’ and you’ll see your new style appear in the list. Touch ‘Enable’ and use the back key to go back to the Language & input screen. Now touch ‘Input languages’ near the top and uncheck ‘Use system language.’ Lastly, touch ‘English (US) (PC)’ and you’re done. [Thanks to the guys at AndroidPIT for providing this tip.]

the first time you use the keyboard after doing the above, long press the space bar and select the PC version. :D

I turned it off...8 times out of 10 it told me it didn't recognise my face, once it asked me to blink and then didnt reconise the blink.

Yu enabled the live checker, which requires yu to blink, and did yu try the second option for the face recognition.
