Yes, you would need to know how to root and flash your device.
Check the top stickies for verizon rooting if you are interested, but remember that you will most likely be voiding your warranty.

To get JB now, yes. Our you could just wait for the official version. Not sure how long you'll have to wait though.

I am not sure about the verizon version but on the international version you don’t need to root. I have not rooted and just downloaded the Polish JB and flashed with odin. Didn't even wipe my phone.
Can I repeat that mine is the international version.
