Jellybean installed without knowing it?

I recently bought a Galaxy Note 2 and I gave my Galaxy S3 to a pal. He is visiting for the weekend and I said I would update the phone to Jellybean, but when I plugged it into my PC I found it has already updated? I thought Jellybean was an upgrade that took a while to install - is it possible for it to install itself without you knowing?
 
Are you sure? You would be prompted to accept the update, I am pretty sure about it. It won't install by itself without you knowing.
 
Nah. Your mate will have accepted it. Maybe forgot / didn't understand / didn't read
 
It could easily have popped up infront of something else he was about to press. I've done that s couple of times. Just flashes up something as I'm pressing something else and happens to align with where I'm pressing.

Anyway it's done. We'll never know for sure
