Jellybean on tablet: Noob question about updates/"will delete data"

Just a quick question...I've had my Android tablet (Lenovo IdeaTab 6000) a few months but havent yet seen this...was running updates and it says it will delete all user data.

What gives? I'd like to keep the thing updated but don't want it deleting stuff...am I reading this wrong?

Most updates dont delete data. Does it say "will" or "may"?

"The system partition will be optimized and all user data will be erased during this update. Please back up your personal data before this update"

Yeah the system partition is gona be wiped so things like settings will be lost but i dont wana tell you you wont lose data in case you do lol so definately backup pics etc if youre gona take the update.
Its always good to do a factory reset after a big update anyway

Lol is it a big update (from version ? To version?)
You should look into backing your stuff up. Android keeps getting better imo
