There is absolutely NO reason to give that award to a Freshman. The "Johnny Football" hype took over like a snowball rolling downhill.
Sure i would have liked to see Te'o win the Heisman, but no Defensive player has ever won it. I figured that it would be a long shot, at best. A freshman hasn't paid enough dues to get that trophy, no matter what school he goes to. What does he shoot for next year? What happens if he breaks his leg, and never plays again? I believe that it's more about the "Johnny Football" hype. The Aggies spent a lot of money promoting that guy, and it paid off, that's all. That award is usually given to a Quarterback, or a Running Back because they are the flashiest players on the team.
O.K. I do respect everyone's opinion on this subject, but just ask yourself this question. Why hasn't any other Freshman ever won the Heisman? There have been great players who have won it as a Junior or Senior, and they had outstanding credentials as a Freshman. I believe that it should be a compellation of their "body of work", as a football player. You do a great job in your Freshman year, and you are noticed and talked about going into your Sophomore year. If you continue the great playing, then the sports writers realize that you are not a fluke, and your name goes in for consideration. If this rule is not applied, then someone could "steal" the trophy, with constant pressure from that person's school. A good example, although he wasn't a freshman, is Doug Flutie. A "Hail Mary" pass completion, a Heisman Trophy for him, and his coach gets a job in the NFL. The "fighting Irish school" wasn't Notre Dame, it was Boston College. That's my opinion, and i'm sticking with it.
That just proves my point. If any of those ten where deserving of getting the statue, why didn't they? Answer...Because they were FRESHMEN. The old unwritten rule was broken this year, because of HYPE. The term "Johnny Football" got inside lots of peoples heads.
