How do I mark a section of text. A couple of times I got a begin and end blocking arrows, but it was trial and error and by that point who knows what double taps, etc I had used

I press long on the approximate text location, get a pop up menu and choose 'Select text'. That let the two select arrows appear ... voila.

I like it this way because the pop up menu let me also choose 'Select all', that means select all text of the file and which I use quite often
