Root just a quick boot question

You cannot remove the sound but you can remove the animation with a root explorer.
/System/ has all system files. Let me check the full path... brb

Found it.

/system/media bootani.qmg (I renamed mine to Qmg.Bak just in case I need to restore it. The other qmg is the opening Samsung logo.
 
Find or make a file of the same format and replace the current metroboot or Samsung boot animation using a root explorer (I use "root explorer" by speedsoftware).
 
qmg is a closed source format made by samsung, only ones making it is samsung. however you can put other qmg files in there. and i think there is a file named poweronsnd that is the metropcs hello hello helo
 
actually you are both right, we discovered a trick on teh prevail that allowed us to use a bootanimation.zip by renaming some files in /system/bin :)

but yes normally just repacking a kernel and editing init.rc is enough

Yeah, but generally (so far as I have seen in just over a year) if a full custom kernal is made it is as part of a full rom. I guess that's because I'm used to full rom builds.
The only cooked rom I have seen/used a custom kernal for is the Icarus rom for the ascend.
