I bought a used droid mini from a friend. It was a Verizon plan phone.

It should be a snap. Just swap out the nano sim with the one your prepaid service uses. Which services are you looking at BTW?

Depends on which prepaid service you want to use. The cellular carriers generally don't believe in community and sharing so their cellular networks and the hardware that work on them aren't necessarily interchangeable.

What if I used Verizon prepaid?
Shouldn't be a problem, just get a new SIM for it. You can order it online, call CS or just whip in and ask them to set you up 
It should work with Verizon Prepaid, yes:

You can also use it on a Verizon MVNO like Page Plus.
If it's GSM SIM unlocked you could use it on a T-Mobile carrier, although it doesn't have all the T-Mobile bands so I'd keep it on a Verizon carrier for best compatibility.
