Root Just bought an a855 off ebay.....

Hey folks, I just bought an OG Droid (a855) from ebay for $30 for my wifey to use as a backup. I have read that the way to go with this particular device is root, overclock, and flash CM7. Her EDC phone is a Razr Maxx. I have not rooted that though, as she cracked the digitizer and I am sending it back to Motorola to get repaired.

Is what I mentioned above truly the best way to go for the a855? What else should I know about the phone? She uses her Razr all day everyday to surf the net, play Words with Friends, Facebook, and play Songpop.

Any and all help/advice will be greatly appreciated. :)

Owner of OG Droid. Now using it as desk clock, but it is an awesome phone. Mine is rooted, using Steel Droid GB ROM. Stock, phone is on Froyo. I rooted when brainiacs took away ability to have led light blink with screen on. Needed if docked....

Custom ROMs fixed this. CM7 had some issues for me, including phone ringing, swiping to answer it, and it still rings. One of the most beautiful ROMs for this is MIUI. (No ability for led w/screen on, but it seems that I am one of the few that needs this....)

Phone is built well. I just wanted a bigger screen (I am old... )

Battery will disappoint after the RAZR Maxx, but most older phones have poor battery life....Any questions, ask away!

I still have my original DROID as well. I haven't been able to explore all aspects of it, but you can take a look at Emmanuel's ICS and JB ROMs for the DROID in the All Things Root / ROMs section. I installed the ICS on my DROID and it seems a lot more stable than even CM7.

I'm now on a BIONIC, but I haven't sold my DROID b/c I'm keeping that as *my* backup, just in case :P With accessories and all I think I can still get around $100 for it - solid, durable phone. I have a spare battery and an external battery charger, so that helps a lot.

Hey guys, so I got the Droid the other day in the mail. I did not realize how well built this thing is!

However, I am having an issue with rooting that maybe you can help me with. I have done my research on this, but still do not totally get it. Most of the root methods I have found involve running Windows. That is an issue for me, as I run Ubuntu. I cannot find drivers, or figure out how to run Superoneclick on Ubuntu. Can you guys help me out? I would greatly appreciate it.

My Beloved Droid will always be in my possession. I intend to keep her and show her to my grandkids one day, letting them experience the phone that actually started the Android revolution. Sure, there were other Android phones before the OG Droid... but Android didn't really take off until the A855 made it mainstream :)
