Just brought home my first tablet: Now what?

Hi all, I just opened my new tablet and it's plugged into my Mac Mini right now. I don't know what I'm supposed to do now. Nothing popped up on my Mac when I plugged it in. What do I need to do to interface with the device? I just want to use the device for reading PDF files. Is it a decent unit?

How do I upgrade to Android 4.4?

Here are the specs:

OS: Android 4.2

CPU: ARM cortex A20 dual core 1.2ghz processor

RAM: DDR3 1GB (3D Accelerator possible for 4D games)

Display: 10.1" TFT 1024x600 capacitive touch panel

USB Port/Audio Port/Micro SD card

I just noticed that Android is up to version 4.4, is it worth it for me to upgrade? This is my first tablet and my first Android device as well.

Please help me!

Edit:

Battery: 3.7V Li-Polymer 6000mAh

How long will the battery last in terms of its entire lifetime? A year or longer?

Wow, that's a lot of questions, I'll try and answer a few of them! First, for what you want the tablet for it's MORE than adequate, even if you don't upgrade to 4.4!! I don't have a Mac, but I know that in my case, I have to have the tablet turned on when I plug it into Windows for the PC to recognize it, so you might want to give that a shot and see what happens. As far as being able to upgrade, I think it's devise specific, but once again, 4.2 is MORE that you'll ever need for PDF files!! Good luck, Vin.

Hi NewbAndroidUser,

Do you happen to know the manufacturer and model of the tablet? Knowing that will help me make sure your question gets filed in the appropriate location - and will also let me track down whether there are any Android updates available.

As hiredgun mentioned, your device should be more than capable as a PDF reader. And, once again, if you can tell me the model of the tablet, I can do some reading to see if there are any special steps for accessing it from your Mac. It should work automatically, but some devices may require specific drivers or other steps.

This sounds very much like a Chinese tablet, that are usually sold in China. OP did you buy it from Ebay or something. 1Mobile is a Chinese app store that's often substituted for Google Play on low-cost devices coming from China.

Right, it's made in China. It's a low end device, but it has a dual core processor.

How can I put Google Play on it?

I don't have a Mac.. so not sure how they interface with each other.

but a solution around this: use Dropbox software. look in my signature to find a link. we both get extra space to use.

install the app to your device.
install the software on your Mac from the website.
it acts like a folder on your Mac. what ever you put in there.. will auto sync over to the device... any device. as many as you want.

Nah its a big Android news site/blog (trustworthy imo). I like their podcasts (and Phandroid's Mobile Roar) :)

Yeah. Enabling unknown sources is pretty safe as long as you only install apps from trusted sources (like amazon).
Once you install amazon, dont install anything else from your browser unless youre really sure of it
