Just dropped a phone for the first time in my life; my Incredible!

I just got up from reading the forum and grabbed my phone to head to a different room. It literally flew out of my hand and hit the floor and I saw something go flying from it. My heart dropped.

Relieved to find out it was actually the front half of the case that had come off, and the phone had no damage. Case is snapped back on now and all is okay.

I have the red/black gradient case and it's pretty smooth. Now I'm wondering if a case with some grip on it would actually be better. It wouldn't be for people sliding it in and out of pockets but as far as actually holding onto it, it would help.

At least the case saved the day with no apparent consequences that I can see yet.

Can't believe my first dropped cell phone was this one!!!

And by the way, when I got my phone in the store yesterday it was a total non-event. No big fanfare, no line, nobody even looking at the display unit or asking about it. Just a poster in the window. Nobody even knew it existed! Guess I didn't need to worry about them running out.

Events like that are when it pays to have a solid metal brick of a phone that you could probably put someone in the hospital with if you threw it at them.

I pre-ordered mine, but I went to the store first thing yesterday to buy a case for it and it was the same way. I was expecting there to be a line wrapped around the parking lot, but when I arrived, there was just one old lady waiting at the door at 5 minutes till opening. It was just like you said...no fanfare except for a poster in the window and the employees were wearing Droid Incredible shirts.

Most people don't know or care what Android is. Including people who own an Android phone.

Glad your phone survived the fall, I'm sure some nice cases are coming out soon. I put the Otterbox commuter on my Hero and love it!!

I haven't seen Verizon advertising it much here, nor did they refer customers to the "new phone coming out soon."

My guess is they didn't want an opening day rush, but more steady customers over the month. That, and pre-orders took alot of load off of the stores.

Motorola must have some ridiculous exclusive marketing contract with VZ because there is virtually NO marketing for this phone.
My sister just so happened to be shopping for a phone yesterday, walked into a VZ store and fell in love with the Incredible (not knowing I had one)

They were completely sold out though so she'll have to wait for another week or so.

I told her I highly recommend a case for it to avoid what you just described. She keeps her phone in her purse a lot, it can fall out and I would hate to see such a nice phone get damaged.
Glad to hear yours survived the fall, I'm still ultra paranoid about dropping mine until I can get a case for it. (hurry the hell up Innocase!) ;)

Ya, it's funny how Verizon works. They advertised the old droid like crazy before it's release, and people bought the crap out of it. Now they have a phone that is 10 times as cool and desirable than the moto, and hardly any pre-release advertising other than the website, and us Android freaks.

Just doesn't make sense? Most consumers have no clue that the DI is even out or what it is, and yet it blows the current competition completely away.
And that's pretty much the consensus from 99.9% of all reviewers and tech media.

Oh well....I guess we are the lucky few, and not every little third grader has our phone!:D

They're all idiots. I went to best buy - I had a very genuine non-commissioned cell rep that was helping me out.

I went in 2 weeks ago - I told him how much I loved android and kept looking at the Droid Eris asking all sorts of questions and whether it was worth getting.

He didn't even mention once that a new one was coming out and that I should wait.

Their goal is to sell current inventory I think that is the problem.

My Verizon store sold out in the morning yesterday. They ordered one for me to be shipped over night saying it would probably arrive Monday. Well, it arrived today and I missed it so I'm going to pick it up at the station by 6p.m. and hopefully catch a Verizon store before closing so I can get it activated. Can't wait! 2.5 hours to go!

This is wildly speculative, but before the Droid came out Verizon really didn't have any modern smart phones other than Blackberries which are pretty low-tech and use yesteryear's hardware. Since manufacturers have to make a special effort to produce a phone with a CDMA radio in it (which means its sales outside of Sprint/Verizon are virtually zero) Motorola probably had some leverage when negotiating a contract with Verizon. Motorola knew it had a nice piece of hardware, something which Verizon desperately needed to compete with AT&T.

I'm a proud (rooted) Droid owner and even if I was given the chance to swap to an Incredible I'm not sure I would, but the lack of publicity for the Incredible certainly is a bit puzzling.

I drop my phone more than bombs during a war
dropped it twice within the first day I got the phone. thank goodness it was on carpet and the other time my shoe broke its fall

no need to go into a VZ store to activate the DI, you can do it from home or even online through your VZ online access.

I was at my local VZW headquarters store in Rochester, NY yesterday morning at 7am, with the store opening at 8am. I was the only one there until about 7:40 when 2 others showed up, and then a couple more a few minutes before 8am. I didn't necessarily need to be first, I just needed to get to work asap. At 8am they opened the doors and said the Mazda (me) was first and the second guy second, and let us go right to the counters to start the transaction.

But yeah, no fanfare, nothing big. They had a bunch of folding chairs setup for what looked like product demonstrations off a laptop for those who had never seen the Incredible before. But after shaking off the numerous attempts to sell me a "bundle" of screen protectors and case I was activated and out the door in 15 minutes.

dave: what type of phone are you using now?
I had a Windows Mobile phone, I was able to sync my contacts to my gmail account wirelessly (before activating the DI), I then turned it off, turned on my DI (After it's been fully charged), and went right through the initial on screen setup steps.

Once I logged into my gmail account on my phone, my contacts were automatically transferred to my phone.

One neat trick: if you decide you need to use your old phone for some reason, take off the battery cover, log into your VZ account, and you can 'change device'. It'll just ask you to enter the serial #'s found on the phone and the phone will be active again. Simply select 'other' as your reason for doing so. You can do this as many times as you like.

People used to go into the VZ stores because they could transfer all your contacts for you but with sync being so popular these days, there's no real reason to drive down there.

hope that helps.

My local VZW store didn't do any big fanfare either, they actually didn't even put up their display unit (employees are still playing with it though =p) but good luck getting ANYTHING for it. Not only did all the phones sell out by about mid-day but I went in about an hour before close to see if I could get one of the leather belt holsters for mine and the guy just stared at me with a tired "wtf" look and finally said "Im sorry were out...of all the accessories. Thats all we've been selling all day they completely wiped us out", I couldn't help but laugh at the look on his face.

I accidently slung mine yesterday. Probably about 2 foot across about 3 ft in air hit a dresser drawer and fell on hard wood floor. I was very scared being it had NO case on it. Fortunately nothing happened to it went and bought a snap case from VZW to hold off until the innocase comes out
