Just got an Evo v. Some questions...

Hey guys, I just upgraded my Motorola Triumph to the Evo V, and damn is it good.
I just had a bit of questions though.

1. Is there anyway for me to uninstall the sense ui? I would like to use stock ice cream sandwich or jelly bean if that is possible. I don't care if i have to root.

2. What's with the wifi hotspot app? I thought you had to pay $15 dollars to virgin mobile to use your phone as a wifi hotspot. Am I going to be charged if i use it?

3. I heard some of the evo v's on this forum have had some problems (battery issues, etc). Is there any way to make sure my evo v doesn't have any problems? Cause if so, I'd rather replace it sooner rather than later. Also, what issues are there currently with this phone?

4. Is there anyway to tune down the sensitivity of the home buttons? If i'm typing while holding the phone vertically, I always seem to accidentally touch the home or search button with my palm unless i'm being very careful. This can get very frustrating. Is this the phones issue or is this something you get used to? (I didn't seem to have this problem with the triumph).

5. Finally, how do I turn the phone off? (sorry if this may seem like a n00b question, I've been holding the lock button for like a half hour and nothing has happened).

Thanks! :D

There are many non-sense based ROMs available (including CM9 and CM10). Check out the all things root section.

The official sprint wifi-hotspot app is not supposed to work unless you've paid the fee, but I hear rumors of it working without (I'm not taking that risk myself though).

I use a laza extended battery (never even opened the stock one) so I don't know about battery issues - I get ~3 days off charger with moderate use. There are some issues with the sms/mms that can be fixed by changing the hboot, radio, etc (again, check out the stickys in the all things root section).

No idea, I've had this issue every now and again myself. Also coming from the Triumph, I guess over sensitive is better than non-responsive.

You have to hold the power button on the home screen (does not work on the lock screen).

Thanks! :D

Thanks a lot! I've had a triumph, but never really delved too deep into it.

Also, what exactly is a rom? Is it like a skin to the phone? Or is it like a whole new operating system (like windows 7 vs mac os x) for it?

Is there any way to install a rom without rooting?

Also I know that rooting would void my warranty, but would you know if there is any way to make it un-rooted, or make it look like it has never been rooted in the first place?

Again, Thanks for your help!

Rooting on the Evo is a bit of a difficult process if you're not very familiar with rooting, but there are guides and even a a youtube video or 2 on how to do it. Yes a ROM is like a different OS. You can always flash your phone back to stock and unroot it.

Ok. Thanks.
Well I guess i have to start somewhere, and the guides on the all things root forum seem very helpful. I think I might try to root and install the mobster rom.

Is there any fix for the super sensitive capacitive buttons if I root?

It is possible to unroot your phone but usually if i return a phone or get it replaced/fixed i will just flash a stock based rom and wipe all my data i have not had a problem with it yet..
Ok. Thanks.

you will be glad you did, and as far as i know no but i may be wrong

I believe that you're just going to have to get used to the Evo's touchscreen, unlike the 6 Triumphs that I had the screen actually works. ;-) And while it's not nearly as easy as running Ginger break on the Triumph getting root and s-off is time consuming but by no means is it difficult and well worth the time invested. Good luck and enjoy a much nicer experience than the Triumph was capable of.

Actually rooting an Evo V isn't that bad or even a long process after you do it once or twice. It's the same as other HTC phones, so at least once you do one, you can do most.

It may be more in depth, but you know it works, and it could be worse... It's only been recent that they could root the Optimus Elite without hacking and re-writing the entire firmware.
