Just got my phone - now what

OK, well i read through the sticky on rooting phone, pretty sure i can do the pre kitchen thing, but then what. I want my phone to work to the best of its ability with the fewest bugs. i am confused on what to do after i root the phone.

My phone isnt that bad, but dialer is laggy, text can be laggy, and accessing/loading pics from SD card can be slow as well (but this can be an SD card thing, just got a class 6, in mail now).

So After i run pre-kitchen, then what?

i read that you should wipe your phone first, this true?

Make sure you backup with Pre-Kitchen before loading new ROM! It will help if you running to any issues. First time I try to install Fresh Rom it install correct, so I restored from the backup to original stock ROM. The second time worked like a charm. Backup help me there. If there were no backup, I'm guessing installing RUU version of the ROM would restore the phone if I'm correct but the data would be lost.

Thanks for your replies, i know it must be a PITA to always answer the same questions.

so no need to start from scratch, all my contacts and apps will stay?

Step1 - Root using pre-kitchen (using sticky instructions)
Step2 - Nandroid backup
Step3 - Fresh 1.1 (using sticky instructions)
Step4 - Nandroid backup
Step5 - Gumbo kernel
Step6 - Nandroid backup
Step7 - possibly setCPU?

now for the Noob questions, as if the previous wasnt noob enough.

How do you do a nandroid backup?
What do i do with it now that its rooted?

Glad you asked, you perform a nandroid backup on each recovery screen. Trust me, you will see the option. As soon as your phone is rooted, you will go to the recovery screen, you will see nandroid backup, then back it up.

Load up Fresh 1.1, go back to recovery screen, back it up.

Load up gumbo kernal, back it up

Purchase SetCPU, set it at 528max/160min.

And your golden. I can't tell you how much I love this phone.

sweet, thanks guys. plan on doing this this weekend. I am not sure i 100% understand it and am kind of scared to do it, but plan on taking my time and doing step by step.

If you do the auto- rooter you can have all of it finished in twenty minutes. Don't do it manually. Good to know how but... you can do it automaticly with kitchen. Amazing program.

i would rather do it manually maybe its just what im used to since i rooted my pre manually to.

my advice...use pre-kitchen to add boot screens... or themes.. or add/remove apps... but root it manually.. just copy/paste the commands and you'll be rooted in the same 20 minutes.. this will give you a better understanding of how to do more complex things later
