Fortune does an annual survey, asking business people to vote for the companies that they admired most, from any industry.

The results for 2012: Google is the second most admired company in the world! Very well done I say :)

Under 'Why it's admired', they write:

For Google, 2011 proved a period of transition. Eric Schmidt passed the CEO reins onto co-founder Larry Page in April, who not long after essentially streamlined the company into six major product areas, including search, social, mobile, and ads.

Google made several acquisitions, spending $12.5 billion for Motorola Mobility and $125 million for Zagat, among others. Consumer-facing services like Gmail, YouTube, and Google Reader saw significant updates, and the company finally unveiled its social network, Google+. Android also continued to dominate. According to Andy Rubin, SVP of mobile, 700,000 Android devices are now activated every day.

Well, shoot, I was really hoping to not see who I saw at the top of that list! I think that Google will be able to overtake that number 1 spot if they continue the work that they do. People complain about Google knowing everything in your life, and not to trust anyone with your own information. While that's all true and dandy, I think it's too late for most of us early adopters of Gmail, Android and even Google Voice. Such is life.

Yeah I figured as much about #1. And of course the major headlines all touted them, without mentioning that Google was right behind them. Conspiracy I tell you.

"...in the world"?? ... shouldn't it be, most admired companies in the United States? Cant see South West Airlines, AT&T, J.P. Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo or Berkshire Hathaway getting much admiration around here.

"700,000 Android devices are now activated every day."

apple who?

Activation number mean nothing when 80% of them are in the third world and make zero dollors for the manufacturer or Google. It certainly doesn't bring developers to Android ahead of iOS. The statistics of activations is a useless number IMO.
Companies like Samsung, LG, Motorola, HTC would kill to be in Apple's shoes. Right now, Apple is the major force in the mobile industry. One little rumor from Apple puts other companies into a tizzy!

+1..

..and if Google is the 2nd on the list, it seems that the C.I.A. would be at the top of such a list.
