Root Just rooted - so which ROM?

erehwon13

Newbie
I've just successfully rooted my phone, thanks to the forums here of course. :D

So now I need to pick my first ROM.
It needs to be something easy while I still feel my way. I was going to go for cyanogenmod but then I heard that it needs a new radio, which I don't want to do at this stage.

So what are my priorities?

  • Stability
  • Lots of spare memory (that was my main reason for rooting)
  • All normal functions (I saw one ROM where the camcorder wasn't working)
  • Straight forward flashing
  • Main Google apps
Once I've got my feet wet then I'll move on to something more challenging, but one step at a time, eh!

The ones I've looked at are:

  • Redux
  • dGB (Yes you can recommend this one SU!)
  • Sense ROM - possibly a 3.0 ROM if the performance is OK.
  • MIUI - probably not atm as I prefer the Android style

Opinions?

Well I will get in before Dan and plug dGB. Haven't come across any issues with it. Runs really well. Nice and small and allows you to add what you want and doesn't come with a load of stuff you don't want. The Google apps can be downloaded separately.

If you go for Redux, then I would suggest 1.2 rather than 2. The older version is very good and reliable but the newer version has some issues [I couldn't use a particular app because it kept force closing, for example].

LeeDrOiD HD V3.3.3-Port-R5 is a great sense rom but it's a 2.1 sense rom with sense 3 bits, i'm using PyramidMod007 at the moment, which is a sense 3 based rom, it's a good stable rom, i was using the LeeDrOiD rom i mentioned just check them out see if you like them

hi
for me miui xj or redux2 or dGB.
but just heard from someone that latest xj might have issues ?

just play imo, but nandroid first :-)

cheers
dan

CM doesn't need a new radio. If you have a radio from Froyo (basically if you rooted your device whilst it was android 2.2) then it would be fine.

I would personally recommend redux. 1.2 or 2.0 as i had no issues with either. dGB is very good, but to get the best from it, you need to change your hboot and i think that's a bit advanced for you at this stage. Leedroid is also a good starter rom.

I'd go with this advice. LeeDroid and Redux (do you want Sense or not?) are both good stable roms and both have a2sd+ versions - probably the most straightforward way of getting you that extra memory you crave.

What I would say though is neither are in active development. Lee seems to have moved away from the Desire (although his HD port rom still gets some love) and the dev behind Redux has said it will get no omore development from him.

good advice I'd say, also look at Oxygen;

Very good ROM, I used without issues for many weeks, only left it 'cos dGB ;)

Wow! Thanks for all the advice. I don't know if it makes my job any easier though.

Right, I think my first try will be Redux 1.2 (Starter Edition). Simple and small (so I can load my own bloatware). But I now have a good list of other ROMs to try.

Thanks for the great info. I'll let you know how I get on.

Try Redux 2. Don't worry about the 'TEST' part of the name. It's very stable and is a couple of versions of GB newer. No bloat in this one either - comes in at 90mb. Without a custom HBOOT you don;t get the free memory back but its an indication of how light it should be on battery etc.

Well my first flash with Redux 1.2 went well enough, apart from the fact that the Market app keeps FC'ing. It works first of all then automatically updates to the new version (3.1.5). This then runs from 2 secs to 2 minutes but always Force Closes. Difficult to install new apps

Anyone else had similar problems? (Madhatter said he had FC issues, but with Redux 2). I did a wipe data and cache before flashing so no data should be left behind.

Yes that is a common problem which has been mentioned in several threads. You need to delete the marketupdater from system/app either by removing from the rom using winrar or from the phone using root explorer. Also clear market updates from app management. This will take you back to the older version of market.

Thanks madhatter. I'll give that a go.

Is it just Redux 1.2 that has the incompatibility with the latest version of Market or is this common with other ROMS?

I think there are problems with other versions but it did work for me in Redux 2 but I found it laggy to be honest. I would stick to 1.2 but that is only my opinion and others might not have had issues with Redux 2 like I did.

No lag issues with v2 but I am having to 'clear data' on the market app every few days. It just hangs.

Pretty sure though I was getting that on my last rom. Maybe more to do with the new market app rather than Redux?

To be honest its not a big enough issue for me to do anything about it so far

there were a number of fc issues and Spare parts just wouldn't open up at all for some reason. 1.2 was fine and was just as fast in my opinion and more stable. The notification bar in Redux 2 was good but not worth the hassle I got from other things so reverted back to 1.2 and am now settled on dGB which is fast, smooth and stable.
