K-9 sending thru WIFI but not DATAPLAN

blubot

Newbie
hello,
i am using a Galaxy SII LTE and just installed K-9 email client. I can receive emails without problems. I can send emails using wifi connection.
However I am unable to send emails using my dataplan and get the following error message: 'java.net.SocketException: Connection reset by peer'

what could be the problem? I have the same issue with MAILDROID.
help...

thank you

Hmmm. Me too - your post encouraged me to test it as I never normally send emails over data. Got a java error, 'java.net.ssl.SSLException:SSL handshaking .....'. Also tried via 3GHA (K9 based) and got the same - 'java.lang.Exception'. From Googling sa little it "could" be something to do with security certificates on the server. At least on mine I believe that's the case. Before it was just an irritant but now you've highlighted this I'll have to look into it further ....

Well, Java is highly suspect right now. What with that super dangerous rootkit floating around. I've already shut it down on my laptop and desktop machines. Still looking for a way to ban Java from my phone and tablet.

Who knows how I can disable, or even uninstall, Java from Android 4.0.3?

@Crashdamage: what do you mean by pay attention to the security setting?
I mean that's probably where the problem is. I can't tell you what it should be - check with your ISP. You might even have to just experiment some with the settings to find what works.

Right. Well it seems I've solved MY problem with emails over data. This issue actually made me look at my email settings for all my kit - phones and PCs - as I'd been having some 'untrustworthy certificate' issues for a while. Turns out that my email provider had changed in/out email servers and hadn't thought to communicate this (well, they had probably put it on a web page somewhere but hadn't done anything actually 'proactive' like send an email out. Doh ..... ). Seems like the old ones 'sorta' worked still but changing to the correct settings sorted the certificate problem. But not the data plan ones ....

Turns out this one was related to my Vodafone Sure Signal ( ... Vodafone Sure Signal – get a great mobile signal at home. ... ) - basically this is a femtocell that gives me a good mobile signal at home. Don't actually need it so much in this house but I had no signal at all in my last house. If I switch it off then all is good with email - with it on it won't send/receive. So that's my problem to sort out.

[Just to add: I use wifi when in the house normally. I just decided to switch it off and check out the problem the OP has].

On the security mentioned above I'd check the latest recommended settings from your email provider. As I said, the in/out servers had changed names plus you didn't now need to use ssl on the outgoing server. It shouldn't have been an issue because the old 'ssl on' settings still worked but by changing a couple of things at a time things got out of sync and I needed to check all settings from scratch.

Ho hum ... we live and learn ....

Dave: thanks for your message. all my settings seem ok. I am using godaddy and followed their recommended settings. yet no lock still unable to send thru dataplan.

I will call my phone provider and ask them if they have any special outgoing security settings and give this a shot.

everyone: problem solved, as crashdamage recommended to check security settings, i compared them 1:1 with my settings on my mac. on my handset i did NOT enable SSL settings which was needed for my IMAP accounts. suggested default ports on the android are fine but important to select SSL authentication. I received "UNVERIFIED SECURITY WARNING" but just hit "ACCEPT" and it works like a charm now.
thank you so much!
