K9 Email Chewing up Data Usage??

It's a known issue.
Remove K9, then I highly suggest, you install the original Gmail app, it's the first thing I do with all my Android phones that do not come with it preloaded.
Then if you use Yahoo, use the Yahoo app from the appstore and you are good to go.
For all others quite frankly I've not found a decent alternative. That's simply a characteristic of Android.
These phones just work best with Gmail and it's original app.
If you are open to it, I highly endorse using Gmail as your default email. It's the fastest, most reliable mail for an Android phone.
The battery life issue will improve dramatically.

As a long time BlackBerry user I was spoiled by my battery life and my addiction to instant email gratification. The best email app I found is MailDroid. I am not affiliated with them or anything. Does NOT drain my battery. There is a free and paid version. FWIW I have the paid version worth every penny...

it all depends on how many emails accounts you have linked to it and how often you have it check for new ones

What is the specific issue you are having, or have had, with gmail?
I am quite curious, as I have found it ultra reliable on all of my various (not just Android) smartphones.
You can't turn it off. It runs in the background all the time. I don't leave 3g on all the time so i don't need it running forever. Of all the email apps i've used it did more to kill my battery than others. So i froze, went to k-9 and never looked back. Besides, why have two or three apps for each email i use when i can have one that checks them all?
Edit: I have three email accounts... my legacy Yahoo account form 1997, a spam account I use when I sign up at some websites (No, not porn), and Gmail. K-9 gives me an all-in-one solution - even though, like I said, lately it won't delete (or mark read) YMail on the server.
The reason why I don't us gmail is because I've had an aol account since the early 90s and that's where all my email goes. I'm thinking about reinstalling k9 and fooling with the settings. Also, I just noticed that my "use wireless networks" setting was on, so I'm thinking that maybe that was partially to blame for data being chewed up quicker than usual.

I liked K9, ran it back in the Fall, but stopped using it because of the data issue. What it was doing was downloading 5mb of data every 15 minutes, even if I had no email. (I had a data usage monitor running to track this) Didn't really notice it until my home internet went down for a few days, so it was doing 20mb of 3g data per hour all day and night. Didn't notice it when I was almost entirely on Wifi.
I played with the settings, tried everything, (limited size, number of emails, etc.) but still could see 5mb of data coming down every 15 minutes (even when I was getting NO emails at all), so I turned K9 off. Everytime the market notified me of a K9 update, I'd go download it, and try again, always the same result. So I gave up on it. Too bad, I liked the program.

In K-9 you can set certain folders as "1st Class" or "2nd Class" (or no class) and tell K-9 which class of folder to monitor/sync/push/pull.
So, all the folders I have resident on Yahoo (for example) where I store received emails, I set up as 2nd Class (including the Draft and Sent folders). And I've told K-9 to only monitor and sync 1st Class folders... which is ONLY the Inbox.
To monitor only 1st Class folders: You need to be in the specific account (where is says "Load up to 25 more), select Menu -> More -> Settings -> Account Settings -> Fetching mail. You'll see Poll folders and Push folders. I have that set to Only 1st Class folders.
To set the class of folders: You need to be in the specific account (where is says "Load up to 25 more), select Menu -> Folder list. Select each individual folder you want to check (a pain in the butt, however you have to adjust each individually), in my case a folder named "Misc." (See Edit below!!) Select Menu -> More -> Settings -> Folder settings. A popup will show a number of options, but the important ones are "Folder sync class" and "Folder push class." My "Misc" folder is set to 2nd Class for Sync - it won't sync that folder.
Of course you won't have access to the mails stored there via your phone if you do this...

Edit... where the folders are listed, you can also long press the folder name, and go to "Folder settings" from there.
Thanks for tbe explanation, makes perfect sense. I had a great email app on my HTC Aria but it is not available on the app markt. Looks like I'llhave to try something new...any suggestions?
