Help K9 Mail: attaching a file that's not a photo

Hi all,
when I choose attach in K9 mail the predetermined list of apps come up in the complete action with list, I'd like to add the my files launcher to this list so I can attach word documents etc stored on the phone and not just pictures but I can't seem to work out how to do it..?

Install a file explorer app such as ES file explorer.

Now when you click on attach you will have the option to select any file using the file explorer.

didn't work for me. I have a filer explorer installed and it doesn't show up in the list. There should be an option to specifically add whatever app I want. Forcing me to use the file explorer he decides I should use is wrong.
