Keep getting ads and suspect a rogue app

Hi all,

I keep getting ads in the notification area during the night (one per night) and can't seem to figure out the culprit. They are generally scams like tricking you into signing up for a monthly service via some "contest". Today's was for something about a website IQ quiz (mymindquiz.com). The notification icon looks like the Android marketplace one.

Anyone ever experience this before?

Thanks.

Yes, one of your free apps is supported by those notification ads. Uninstall the more recent ones and see if they go away.

The technique (using the Android notification system to push ads) is called AirPush - watch out for apps where people complain about it in the Market comments.

Here is the opt out app for air-push notification ads: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.airpush.optout&feature=more_from_developer. I am not sure if this tells you which app has air-push feature.

If you want to find the culprit app that's sending you the notification ad, then download this: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.brosmike.airpushdetector&feature=related_apps

Here is a really good thread if you want to read more on airpush: http://androidforums.com/android-lounge/328149-airpush-do-you-want-ads-your-notification-tray.html
