Keeping unlimited data with Verizon

Has anyone had any luck with keeping their unlimited data plan when getting an upgrade from a dealer (best buy, radio shack, amazon, etc) as opposed to doing it at a Verizon store? If so how?

I haven't heard a work around for this still.

The typical and easiest way to keep, if you have a second line, upgrade it and put the new phone on the unlimited account :)

Otherwise you'll lose unlimited upgrading the original line.

Just be careful doing that method with authorized dealers because they might have extra conditions. Amazon does, that's for sure.

You have to buy a phone off contract. From what I've heard, they only force you to change your contract. You can't do an upgrade and keep it. Unlike the other carriers, Verizon is refusing to grandfather people in.

So, you have to decide which is more important to you. Unlimited data (which most people don't need anyway) or paying full price for a device.

Moved the thread to the Verizon forum to get some people with Verizon service eye's on this. Hopefully this helps :D

You can always use a ghost line. For those who don't know, if you have an extra phone line that you don't use, and it's up for upgrade, then upgrade it, take the phone off of it, and put it on your phone number. Then use some old dumb phone and put it on the extra line. Verizon will do all this. However, even stripping the line down to just shared minutes and no data or anything, it's about $13 per month with all taxes and fees.

For me and my wife, we would save $10 per month to get rid of our ghost line, go to 8GB shared, while I lose unlimited. To keep my unlimited and have the ghost line, it's $15 cheaper than having 12 GB shared and not having the ghost line.

It just depends if unlimited is worth that $13 to you.

Only new accounts need to go to the new plan. Old accounts can keep the old family share plans with unlimited, they just can't upgrade or add a line with unlimited. They'll be stuck with the tiered data package. Thus the only way to keep the unlimited on an account is to have a line without unlimited on the account.

The cell guys at my local Best Buy did this for me last December. We bought our S3s on our 2 dumb-phone lines, and they moved them over to our 2 unlimited data lines and re-activated the dumb-phones for us. I first tried to do this at my local Verizon store, but they said corporate "wouldn't let them do this anymore." So I walked over to Best Buy and they did it without issues. They don't care about data, they just wanted to sell me the phone. :)

Thanks everyone for their input. I was able to get it done at Best Buy. Did the upgrade on one of my other lines that did not need to keep unlimited, then swapped to my line thus keeping unlimited data. Also got them to price match. Had to go through two different managers but they did it. Apparently they stopped price matching on phones in March.

Thanks for the tip. Since my mother in law has a dumb phone does that mean I can upgrade her phone, then transfer the new phone to my line with unlimited data and then put her back on her old phone?

Yes and you will extend her contract another 2 years and her upgrade date another 2 years.
