Help Kernel (Android OS) draining battery by keeping phone awake for long periods

jaydee77ca

Well-Known Member
Over the last month or so my battery has been draining at a very high pace. It used to drain at about 1-2% per hour when the phone was not in use. I have GSam and Better Battery Stats and have been doing some investigating but I can't seem to nail down the cause. It seems that the phone is staying awake for about 50% of the time it's not in use which is likely what's contributing to the drain. The problem is that GSam and BBS show that it's Kernel (Android OS) that's keeping it awake which isn't very helpful. I've attached some screenshots with some observations below. The stats are for approx. 2.5 hour period.
  1. Battery drained by 15% total (6% per hour)
  2. Screen is only on for total of 14 minutes
  3. Screen is dark for 13 minutes and dim for 1 minute (so not very bright)
  4. Phone sleeps for only 1 hour
  5. Phone is awake for 1.5 hours
  6. Kernel (Android OS) keeps phone awake for 1 hour
  7. wlan_rx_wake is 1 hour (which matches Kernel (Android OS) wake time)
  8. CPU is at 702 MHz for 1.25 hours (despite screen off and phone not in use)
Does anyone have any ideas on what's going on and how I can resolve it? I've tried a whack of stuff like turning off location sharing, removing apps that might sync that I don't use, changing sync settings, etc. I can't figure out what the problem is and it's driving me crazy!

Thanks!

Wow, I never noticed that in all the cases I had wifi on! I thought it had also happened when just on cellular but looking back through my months of screenshots they are all showing wifi on! Thanks! I've set an IP reservation for the phone on my router now so I'll keep an eye on it and see if it helps!

Much Thanks!

So I set a static IP address in my router and changed my Wifi setup on the phone to be a static IP address but that didn't help.

Not only that, but I paid more attention when not on Wifi and it's happening then also. I've attached a screenshot of a 4.75 hour period with no Wifi on and you can see that the phone was awake for 1.75 hours even though the screen was on for only 16 minutes. Additionally, you can see the CPU was maxed out at 1.5 GHz for 30 minutes and was at it's minimum of 384 MHz for almost 1.5 hours which confirms that the phone was in fact not sleeping for 1.75 hours. During that 4 hours it lost 25% battery which is more than 6% per hour. Before, it used to only use 1-2% per hour when not in use so this is way higher.

Any other ideas?

Thanks!

hmmmm, in BetterBatteryStats, what comes up when you select "Partial Wakelocks/Unplugged/Current"?

I must have not taken a screenshot of those from that time on 4G but attached are a couple from a recent time on Wifi.

The next time it happens on 4G I'll be sure to grab a shot of that screen also.

This might not be the case, but I found the battery draining when at home in a weak WiFi area. The phone was continually searching for a signal. I wasn't using a router and installing one solved my problem. Is it possible that ur having a similar problem but need a different solution?

Do you have Google Now turned on? If so try turning off location reporting in Google maps and see if it helps, it's made a huge difference on mine

From your most recent screenshot it looks like maps is using a fair bit of battery

I disabled location reporting but that didn't change anything. The problem is still there. Here are some more screenshots with location sharing disabled.

This doesn't seem right or good either. It happens pretty much every drive home. The processor is pinned or highly used and the battery temperature is almost 43 degrees celcius! All it's doing is charging and playing music. It never gets that hot when I charge it on my dock at home. The only difference would be that on the way home I play music through Bluetooth using DoubleTwist. But I also do that at the gym on my headphones and it doesn't get hot then (though it's not charging).

I don't think that is out of the ordinary....I had to convert that to degrees F.---110. :p

Hi

I almost sure the battery drain comes from the google apps. I also noticed the same behaviour on different devices (different roms) the only common on the devices is the google apps that actually updating itself without our questions... So i think who using the latest google apps must have the same behaviour. Less visible if someone keep the screen on...
I already tried to switch off everything on google apps and not really helps.. In my case the same thing happens on galaxy s3 with aokp mod and a Nexus 7 with another aokp mod. Before android os processes was always between 2-5% on a full battery discharge... this all changed one or two weeks before.... (i think kinda google app update) Maybe if I log out my google profile that helps, but i cant do that...

For sure: Google Currents takes a lot of battery...

LG G2 running stock 4.4.2 Kitkat

Hi,

Probably too late to offer any help here as was 6 months ago, however I have recently moved from iphone back to Android getting the LG G2(amazing phone!) and was having the exact problem of quick battery drain, with Android system account for 50-60% battery usage when checking battery stats and losing 4-6% battery per hour with the phone screen off and quicker drain when screen on. Being an old android user I knew something was amiss.

Follow your recommendations on this thread I installed GSam and found Android Kernal was accounting for 60% battery drain. After a bit of digging around on forums Google is indicated to possibly to be the culprit. Therefore I went to google settings via the app and done the following;

Connected apps > disconnected all apps bar mail. This seems to have no negative effects
Location > Turn OFF location reporting. Google play service + low battery use (not sure what this is)
Search and Now > Google now turned OFF, Phone search = no change,
Search and Now > voice> OK Google hotword detection > Turn off (think the phone is always listening for a voice command.

Since doing this last night I can report;
7hrs of phone sleep/standby and only 1-2% battery drain total
8hrs moderate use today and I'm on 71% remaining (massive increase before the changes. That includes out in the fields in low signal areas (I'm a farmer).
Sorry for the essey, hope this helps someone

Android kernel and android system still seem to be high up on usage stats but drain is soooo much slower. It may well be this is just something that is the norm for kitkat, but losing just 31% in 8 hours will about do me

Very interesting post.

I'm having very similar problems. Watched a 100% charge drop to 35% over 7 hours (overnight) and no idea what's causing it.

Everything in GS pointing to Kernel and Android.

I just turned off all the things you mentioned and I'll have to see what happens.

In the meantime, If anyone can make sense of the following, here is the export from Kernel and Android. Not sure if there are other things I can do as well.

Similar issues for the last 1 week on my 1 year 8 month old SG3. Was thinking of ordering a new Anker brand battery as Samsung products don't last long. My wife's 3.5 year old iPhone 4 still has amazing battery life. When I upgraded to SG4, I gave her my SG3 and the way the battery is draining (10% in an hour) without any use, she is hating it. I have been trying to convert her to Android and all the openness that comes with it, but this is making it harder.

I have installed GSam and BetterBatteryStats, lets see what it shows. Was using Battery Doctor so far and did not quite understand what it was doing.

I turned off location setting, but then you cannot use Google Maps, so had to turn that back ON. Google Now was already Off, but still went and remove the Ok Google voice option.

Charging back the phone to 100% and will observe.

Is it not a good idea to have both GSam and BetterBatteryStats running at the same time ?

How have you both been getting on?

With my LG G2 I now use Google Now, I quite like its functionality but continue to have voice and location reporting etc off and regularly get about 20hrs of battery life with heavy use in the evenings so am very happy.

Yes, yes, yes! It's working for me! I guess it was FourSquare connected to Google (because it was in the list and it is the last app i added to my phone)

EDIT: I take this back. The battery drainage comes and goes, and it's happening even after a factory reset with barely no apps installed (10% per hour). I hate android and google.

Hi,

I also have the same issue with my Micromax Canvas A1. Initially the battery seems to be awesome as it was draining 2% overnight(around 8 hours) but suddenly something went wrong and now it is draining 7-8% in an hour in idle mode. According to GSAM Battery Monitor, Kernel(Android OS) is consuming most of the battery. I don't get it that why it is happening suddenly. I also tried the solutions given in this post but it didn't help. Please help me if anyone has find any solution to this problem.

I hate responding when I don't have a really good solution, but I just don't like fooling around with the phone and worrying about these little problems. I just have lots of chargers hanging about the house as well as one in the car and just charge as needed. I even went a step further and purchased an extended battery from Amazon and now am really inured to these charging problems. Not really a solution; more of a workaround!

sounds to me your using a universal car charger though it will fit your phone don't mean that the voltage output is the same to the phone

if you have confused your car charger with your wife's or husbands car charger
this could happen and it is taking in an over charge thus forth getting to hot

this may explain why your getting hot battery in car and not at home docking...

some phones require 3.6 -4.5 some maybe higher volts might want to check that . not saying anyone else is wrong all great points just thought to add mine in.. no biggy! thank you everyone... just trying to help... cause these green horns are getting heavy lmaooo:D

I just turned off all the things you mentioned and I'll have to see what happens.

In the meantime, If anyone can make sense of the following, here is the export from Kernel and Android. Not sure if there are other things I can do as well.

It looks to me like someone is tracking you they put up some kind of sync on your phone. But what I do is each thing I don't recognize I will put it in Google and ask what it does. A lot of tracking apps will disguise itself as a system requirement. And that goes for everybody has batteries draining for no reason very possible there is some kind of spyware malware or tracking device

Thanks!

Have you run a scan for malware or spyware?
Do you recognize all of the systems or apps that keep your phone awake? You should try asking Google what each one does. A lot of times tracker apps will disguise themselves as system requirements. Anyway I seem to have had a similar problem and somebody was syncing my phone using the logger. I know some things to look for our SMS tracker, dailymotion, I might be in your best interest to look into what types of apps people use for tracking and how they appear in the applications menu.

Just download a wake lock detector and let your phone sit for a while and you will see what apps are waking your phone and how long....
